In Loving Memory of Svante “John” Juha Kalijarvi
March 12, 1936 – June 16, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Svante “John” Juha Kalijarvi. Svante passed away peacefully at the age of 84 at Health Sciences North. Predeceased by his parents Antti and Amalia (Haarus) of Kortesjarvi, Finland. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 wonderful years, Arja (Taipale) Kalijarvi. Dear brother to 10 siblings, all of Finland, 5 of whom are predeceased. Loving and devoted father to Jarmo (Nicole), Tuija (Pentti Patrakka), and Mark. Proud Pappa to Matti (Angelina), Scott, Cory (Laura), Megan, Craig, and Kayla (Jordan). Dear great grandfather to Leila and Simone. Special friend to the Koski family. Lovingly remembered by his many family members and friends in Finland and Sweden. Svante and Arja moved to Sudbury, Ontario from Finland in 1960 with a vision to build a beautiful life for their family. Svante was a miner and welder for more than 40 years. He was well known for his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and craftsmanship. His favourite place to be was at Lake Penage, where he put his craftsmanship to use and built a camp that the whole family holds closely to their hearts. Svante loved life’s simple pleasures, such as fishing with his best friend Manu Koski (predeceased), nightly saunas with the love of his life, and spending time surrounded by his family. Svante will be fondly remembered for his tremendous sense of humour, many practical jokes, stories that would entertain everyone all night long, and his heart of pure gold. His Finnish SISU spirit was always shining bright, even in his final days. He will be truly missed by those that had the pleasure of knowing him. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
