Family, Honesty, Church and Hard Work: these were the keys to Walter Kuch’s life!
Arriving in Canada in 1939 from Ihorovycja, Halychyna, Ukraine: Walter; and his late parents, John and Maria (Lesij); settled in Oshawa; where he and his late brother Alex; attended Ritson Road School. In addition to owning Kuch Brothers’ Shoes; and Kuchs’ Lucky Dollar Groceries; “Wally” worked at Duplate Canada.
As a natural leader: Walter was President of these Oshawa Ukrainian Organizations: St. John’s Youth Club (originator); Business & Professional Mens’ Club; Self-Reliance Club; and St John’s Orthodox Church.
Devoted husband to Olga (Stepowy) for 70 years; he was a loving father to Daria Olynyk (Mark); and Christine Kuch-Hailstone (Lorne). And doting grandfather to Stefan and the late Andrew Olynyk. Godfather to Cathy Hercia Dancey.
In 1973: Walter and Olga realized one of many married goals; moving to ‘Green Acres;’ their lovely country home. In RR#2 Oshawa, they were thrilled to host family and friends; and many special events. Then, in 2007, they moved to Toronto.
Walter was respected for his integrity, loyalty and kindness. He enjoyed a joke; sports; flying north with the ‘Odessa Angler’ fishing group; and his tractor lawn mower! With a smile; he had a nickname for his many pals! And, could fix anything; often sharing plumbing and electrical tips!
Sadly, Covid-19 took his life on June 18. A private service will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery. We thank everyone for their prayers!
Kindly make a donation in Walter’s memory to the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre-Toronto, where he enjoyed living; or the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius-Long Branch.
