Julie Margaret Simmons
1933-2020
Simmons – Julie Simmons (nee
Meikle) died peacefully at home, on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, age 87.
She will be buried alongside her parents, Marion (Causey) and George
Meikle in Searletown Cemetery. Pre-deceased by sister Joan Loretta.
Born in Wellsford, New Brunswick, Julie grew up in Summerside, PEI.
She subsequently lived in Charlottetown to study lab technology. After
marriage to Donald Leslie Simmons in 1955, Julie lived in Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia; Fredericton, New Brunswick; Houston, Texas; and Hudson,
Quebec where she raised her children, Daniel Walter (Marilyn Pridham)
and Susan Marion. Her granddaughter is Lisa Simmons (Pierre Richard,
Moncton) and great grandson Miles. After her divorce in 1975, Julie
had a brief stop in Halifax, then returned to her hometown Summerside
and started a successful bed and breakfast, Silver Fox Inn. Restoring
this 1892 Harris home was the start of her work in built heritage,
going on to restore two more homes in Summerside. Julie was passionate
about heritage on the island and was involved with the PEI Museum and
Heritage Foundation and was a founding member of the Summerside
Historical Society. Among her accomplishments, she was part of the
team that introduced heritage bylaws to Summerside, and she was
instrumental in maintaining and finding a permanent home for the
international Fox Museum and Hall of Fame. Julie loved golf and played
until age 85. A smart and sensible businesswoman and volunteer, a warm
and loyal friend, and wonderful mother; we will miss her. In lieu of
flowers, please consider a donation to the Prince County Hospital
Foundation or Prince County Hospital Auxiliary. A private family
graveside service will be held at Searletown Cemetery on Friday, June
26, 2020.
