Obituary of Royce Walker
ROYCE CHARLES WALKER
May 6, 1955 ~ June 5, 2020
Royce Charles Walker, husband to Laurie, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 5th, 2020, at the age of 65. Royce was born on May 6th, 1955, in Virden, Mb., lived in Regina from age 4 to 6, and lived the rest of his life in Prince Albert, Sk.
Sports were an important part of Royce’s life. He was a provincial soccer champion numerous times as goaltender, and also represented Team Saskatchewan at the 1973 Jeux Canada Games. Royce was inducted into the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame with the Riverside Rams football provincial champions. He also played high school basketball and track & field. As an adult he enjoyed playing fast ball, bowling, and fishing. As successful as he was as an athlete, the family says he was terrible fisherman!
Royce met the love of his life, Laurie Russell, in Junior High, dated throughout High School, and were married on June 7th, 1975. In 1977 they started their journey as fun-loving parents which included practical jokes, road trips across Canada, camping in the backyard during thunderstorms, and countless trips to the lake.
Royce worked for CN for 3 years then started his long career as a salesman for Weston Bakeries. After retiring from Weston’s in 2012, he was hired on with SRSD as a school bus driver where he thoroughly enjoyed his daily interaction with the kids.
In 1997, he became a proud grandpa when his first granddaughter was born. Then starting in 2011, 5 more grandchildren quickly followed, who he lovingly called “brats”. His grandchildren will remember his playful teasing, fishing trips, and many days spent at the family cabin.
Royce was known for his great sense of humour, never missing an opportunity to crack a joke or pull a prank. He loved to have passionate, deep discussions about politics, current events, and conspiracy theories. He took an interest in people and enjoyed having a heart to heart with the many people who crossed his path over the years, where he would share his unique view on life.
Royce will always be lovingly remembered by his wife Laurie; his children Lisa Walker (Chad), Lee Walker (Sarah), Kristy Balone (Clayton); his grandchildren Sara (Nick), Jace, Gage, Parker, Tate, Charlotte; his twin brother Rick Walker (Donna); his siblings Chyrol Walker (Mario), Tracey Walker, Trent Walker (Wanda); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is predeceased by his mother Helen and her husband Russ Sandberg, his father Royce Walker Sr., his birth mother Marilyn, and his mother in law and father in law Beth & Alf Russell.
The family will have a private gathering in the coming days. In lieu of other tributes, the family respectfully requests that donations can be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada (crohnsandcolitis.ca). Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
