After a never ending battle for good health, Gloria left this earth on Monday, May 25, 2020 at the age of 83. She is finally rejoined with her husband of 61 years, Gilbert “Gib” (2012), their son Bruce (2007) and their son Steven (2012). She leaves behind Kevin (Kingston), his wife Christine Styles, and her daughters Leah and Leslie, as well as Marjorie, and her partner Steve MacDonald, of Pembroke.
Gloria is predeceased by her parents Ralph and Marjorie (Cullen) Guido and her sisters Lorraine (Ernest) Whitehorse, Dolores (Ken) Lloyd, Diane Barette, Sylvia Guido and Maureen (Vince) Licandro. Gloria will be sorely missed by all of Gib’s extended family – brothers and sisters in law and many nieces and nephews – who always welcomed her as an “outlaw”! Gloria had a very special connection with Vince Walker who recently left us, as well as Sandra Walker who always reached out to her, keeping her up to date on the Walker family activities and keeping that connection for mom with dad’s large extended family ever present in her life. Mom always appreciated the check ins and updates. She will also be deeply missed by both Steve and Christine’s families as well. There were many shared family occasions and lots of memories made.
Mom was a kind, caring person. She was a good mother. She was a valued employee during her 25 years as an Administrative Assistant, and later Assistant to the Director, at Rideau Carleton Raceway. She had an unexpected sense of humour – sprinkled with sarcasm and dry wit – and a remarkable memory, remembering so many little details of the lives of the people she would meet. She connected with people. She was gracious and giving. She definitely showed her caring nature by feeding people and if you were lucky, you got to have some of the best butterscotch pie ever!
Mom moved to Pembroke after dad died and encountered a lot of health challenges in her 8 years here. Despite all of that, she showed strength and grace through some insurmountable health issues. She lived on her own until September 2019 and spent the last months of her life at Marianhill. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to all of the staff of Unit 2C. The genuine care and kindness that so many of the staff members showed towards mom over these last months was remarkable. With Covid-19 restrictions, and an inability for family to visit, it brought solace in an extremely difficult time knowing that she was in the hands of good people who not only cared for her, but really liked her too. This will never be forgotten.
Respecting her wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to the constraints of COVID-19, a date for a Mass of Christian burial has yet to be determined. When permitted, she will once again be beside her husband and sons, and will finally be back ‘home’ in Greely, where her heart never really left.
We miss you so much already ❤️
