John passed away peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at the age of 90.
John was born in Holland and was the son of the late Willim & Marie Verkaik (nee Lintmeyer).
John leaves behind his loving wife Alice (nee Vanderham) Verkaik married for over 63 years.
Loving father of John & Jenn Verkaik; Tim Verkaik (Kim); Dorothy Verkaik (Chris); and Nina & Chris McCathern.
Sadly missed by grandchildren: Felicia Verkaik (Kenneth); Carissa Verkaik; Melissa Verkaik; Skylynn Verkaik (Johnny); Nikita Verkaik (Josh); Sadie Verkaik; Jocelyn McCathern (Brett); Brandon McCathern (Erin); Ryan McCathern & Alexis McCathern and 7 great-grandchildren.
John is predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Joris & Laurina (nee Roodzand) Vanderham; his sister Wilma (nee Verkaik) Hummel; and brother-in-laws Reindart Hummel, Frank Toirkens & John Vanderham.
John was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren, in-laws Peggy Toirkens, Laura & Cliff McNally, and Cora & Meindart Kalverda and many nieces & nephews, in addition to many friendships he developed over the years through work, his active fund-raising efforts for Ducks Unlimited, the Legion and Bridge Clubs across Ontario and beyond.
A private family service will take place at the Kendrick Funeral Home-Chatham Celebration Centre, 4 Victoria Avenue, Chatham, ON., with burial in Maple Leaf Cemetery. A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at a later date.
