Riva Weigensberg
(née Beder)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our preciously beloved matriarch, Riva Weigensberg, on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at the age of ninety-seven; a remarkable woman who lived a full, rich and well-lived life. Devoted and adored wife of her sweetheart, the late Edward Weigensberg. Dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Mardy and Bonnie Weigensberg (the late Mary Beth), Andrew and Catherine Weigensberg, Cary and Elayne Weigensberg, the late Allen Weigensberg and the late Marcia Beck. Cherished Bubby of Benjamin, Eric, Johanna and Leah; Liane and Ashton, Jen, Zack and Kayla; Allison and Ben, Adam and Irina, Jordan, Jess and Kyle; Jamie and Irit, Mandy and Shane (our Angel). Proud great-grandmother of Matthew Allen and Noah; Atia, Zane and Hudson; Margot, Pearce and Kira; Connor, Ava and Emma; Noah, Liam, Ivan and Bogdan; Jaiden and Owen; Dylan and Jonah Shane. Dear sister-in-law of Sybil Weigensberg. Predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Sarah and Joe Silver, Jack and Katie Beder, Toby and Phil Satenstein, Joseph and Pola Buchbinder; and by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David Weigensberg, Jack and Sophie Weigensberg, Frank and Freda Weigensberg, Benny and Miriam Weigensberg, and Mary Morantz. Riva lived for her children and took immense pleasure in staying close to everyone in her life, including her many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and long-time friends. She will be immensely missed by them all. Words cannot adequately describe Riva’s undeniable charm and her strong bond with the people she held so dear.
She was a distinguished top salesperson at Dalmy’s in PVM, a dedicated participant in the Jewish community, President of Pioneer Women (Chomedey), President of the Jewish Convalescent Hospital Auxiliary, and was involved in many other volunteer activities, as well as being a lifelong member of the Young Israel of Chomedey, since its inception in 1959. One of Riva’s favourite pastimes was writing poetry – whether for birthdays, other special occasions, or to brighten someone’s day. Her poems were always uplifting and reflected her unwavering optimism and gratitude. ‘Bubz’, as she was affectionately known, was deeply respected and adored by many. She truly delighted in congregating for joyous celebrations and appreciated every aspect of family life. Riva persevered through numerous challenges throughout the years, taking comfort and fortitude in the warm embrace of her loved ones. She nourished so many of our souls with her wisdom. Her quiet strength was immeasurable. It is impossible to capsulize someone’s remarkable life in a few words. We will continue to honour our ‘Bubz’ by reminiscing with many of you and sharing her stories, numerous accomplishments and legacies for years to come.
We wish to acknowledge Mickey Guttman, who has been an incredibly dedicated and supportive friend for over twenty years, and Riva loved him like a son. Special thanks to Lisa Halperin for her love and dedication to our mother. Sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses of the COVID floor at the Montreal General Hospital for their care, concern, compassion and communication. A private graveside funeral will take place. Shiva strictly private. Donations in Riva’s memory may be made to the “Riva Beder Weigensberg Memorial COVID-19 Fund” c/o the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251, or to the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation in memory of Riva Beder Weigensberg, (450) 688-9550.
