Obituary
Broste, Elizabeth (Beppie)
July 5, 1926 – May 1, 2020
Beppie passed away on May1, 2020 at the age of 93, while under palliative care at Sherbrooke Community Centre. Surviving are two sons, Van and Gary Broste (Joceline), both of Saskatoon, three grandchildren, Amanda French of Florida, Luke and Matthew Broste (Krista) of Saskatoon, and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by the love of her life, Harvey Broste, her parents Sam and Bette Van Straten, her brothers Nico, Ab, Bob, and Joe, and her sisters Nettie and Annie. Beppie was born in Amsterdam. She spent her teen years hiding in the Netherlands trying to survive the holocaust, which claimed the life of one brother and many extended family and friends. Beppie married Harvey, who was in the Canadian liberating forces. Harvey returned with fellow military members to Canada, while Beppie came to Canada separately, by ship to Halifax and then by train to Saskatoon. Beppie spoke no English yet braved crossing the ocean alone to a different continent to start a new life. Her experiences did not stop her from having a life filled with compassion. She was a loving mother to two boys, but when her first grandchild was a girl (Amanda), she was ecstatic. Even though Matthew was a boy, she loved and spoiled him the same. Beppie enjoyed playing cards with her special friends Cobie and Burt, Evelyn and Cliff, and Carla and Grant. She cooked incredible Dutch croquettes and baked an apple cake of which no one could eat only one piece. Harvey passed away in 1979 at the age of 56. Beppie never remarried and stayed in the family home as long as her health allowed. In Beppie’s memory, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Sherbrooke Community Centre would be appreciated. A Celebration of Beppie’s life will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements in care of Travis Minor – Mourning Glory Funeral Services 306-978-5200.
