STEWART, Jean (“Jeanie”)
October 30, 1946 – May 1, 2020
Born at home at “Fannyside Lodge”, Slamannan-by-Falkirk, Cumbernauld District, Dunbarton County, Scotland. Died, in care, at Toronto, Ontario, aged 73, following a lengthy struggle with cancer. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Isabella and William Stewart, and by her sister, Isabel McGee. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Benoit (Jean-Pierre) of Ottawa, and by her Calgary family: brother-in-law, Richard N. McGee; niece, Joanne MacPherson (Scott); nephew, David McGee (Nicole); nephew, Michael McGee. She is great-aunt to the MacPherson children (Alexis, Austin, Gabriel, Arianna, Zachary, Georgia, Eliza), to the McGee children (Jacob and Joshua), and great-grand-aunt to Finley MacPherson. Jean is survived as well by first, second and third cousins and their families in Canada, Scotland, England and Australia.
Jean’s family emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1948, living in Midland, Ontario, until 1955 when they moved to Calgary. She attended primary and secondary school in Midland and in Calgary/Bowness as well as business college in Calgary. She was a secretary at a Calgary oil company before moving to Toronto in 1973 where she worked as an assistant to a city alderman and later at OISE/University of Toronto where she was a course facilitator and text editing specialist. Jean loved ballet and other dance forms, music (particularly classical), theatre, reading, writing, her “wee house”, gardening, cats, volunteer work – especially at the Toronto Humane Society – and, lately, gazing quietly at the birds and about-to-bloom plants in her lovely back-garden.
Jean’s friends and former and current neighbours provided her with invaluable, selfless assistance and immeasurable moral support. Heartfelt thanks in particular to Rita, Brodie, Gio and Beth, to the innumerable healthcare professionals who attended Jean as her health declined and to Eva, Gavin, Meghan and Craig, Allan and Daniel. Their friendship, concern and kind, sensitive help were a comfort to her and made her final days and nights less of a strain. Jean was tenacious and had a positive, philosophical attitude towards the hardships she endured in later life. Her gentle disposition and calm, pleasant, generous, thoughtful nature will be greatly missed by all those who loved and cared about her. May she rest in well deserved peace.

Jeanie was a wonderful volunteer at the Toronto Humane Society for over 7 years. She cared so deeply about the cats, and was a joy to have around. She will be deeply missed.
