Obituary of Harry Peter Cleghorn
CLEGHORN, Harry Peter, PhD
December 2, 1939 – April 29, 2020
Harry Peter Cleghorn passed away at home in his 81st year surrounded by his wife and his daughters. He is survived by Gill (Widger) his beloved companion of more than 55 years, and his cherished daughters Marie-Jo (Stephen) and Elisabeth (Vaino). ‘Gramps’ will be much missed by his grandchildren Kathryn, Joshua, Remko and Saskia.
Harry was born in Trinidad, West Indies, and won an Island Scholarship to the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, where he earned B.Sc.Hon – Chemistry. Harry then went on to study at the University of London, England where he gained his PhD – Chemistry. Harry taught as a lecturer at the University of West Indies in Jamaica prior to accepting a position in the Alcan Research Labs in Kingston. He went on to found Cleghorn and Associates, an environmental consultancy group which remained his professional passion up until his official retirement January 2020.
Harry was a long-time member of St. George’s Cathedral. He was a member of the Synod Council, Provincial Synod Council, co-chair of the Training and Development Committee and a member of OpCote, the Ontario Provincial Commission on Theological Education. He later went on to join the Kingston Seniors Centre where he discovered ‘Pickle Ball’. Harry’s great joy was to get out and be among ‘his trees’, particularly at Lemoine’s Point. He volunteered with tree planting, participated in fundraising, and knew most of the ‘regulars’ who passed through this conservation area.
In keeping with Harry’s wishes there will be a small gathering at JAMES REID FUNERAL HOME, 1900 John Counter Boulevard, due to the restrictions of Covid 19, with a celebration of life at some time in the future. If desired, donations in Harry’s memory can be made to: St. George’s Cathedral, or the Cataraqui Conservation Foundation which raises funds to assist with the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority’s conservation education and land acquisition program.
The family would like to extend a sincere thanks to all the members of the health team who supported Harry’s care and allowed us to honour his wish to spend his last days at home especially Simon, Dana, Tammy, and Drs. Izard, Booth, Brundage, and Kondor.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Harry
Peter
