Obituary
James Allan Passed away peacefully on April 25 2020 at the age of 98 years. He was predeceased by his beloved Edna who died last year. Jim was born in Calgary, raised in Vancouver and enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada at the outbreak of WW2. Jims military career was unusual; spending time in the Infantry, Armour, Infantry again and finally in Military Intelligence.Jim went ashore at Juno Beach in the second wave on June 6,1944 where he was wounded. In his inimitable fashion Jim downplayed his injuries and his role in the War; often stating that his time at Normandy was a terrible mistake as he thought his job in Military Intelligence was to send other young men into Harms Way, not himself! For his service in the liberation of France Jim was recently awarded the French Legion of Honour by a grateful French Government. His medal was awarded to him on behalf of France by local members of the BC Dragoons in a very moving ceremony at the Village of Smith Creek attended by friends and the light of his life, Edna.
Jim met Edna in 1943 while he was on course in London. They were married shortly afterward and Jim became an integral member of Ednas London family. Jim and Edna were married for 77 years and lived together first in Canada and later in post war Europe after he re-enlisted. Jim finally ended his time in the Army and took a position in The Department of External Affairs which allowed he and Edna to live in various parts of the world while he worked at Canadian Consulates and Embassys.
Jim was predeceased by Edna and by their infant son Barrie who died shortly after his birth due to injuries he and Edna sustained in an attack in London in 1944 by a V-2 Rocket
After retirement Jim and Edna lived in Vernon and then Kelowna where they met many friends and enjoyed life with a variety of dogs.
In their final years, Jim and Edna were graciously cared for by Marelene Hehr and her husband Roger,by Nicky Manson and her husband Danny(with whom Jim attended Rememberence Day Services) as well as Carol and Settimio Sicolli. The Hehrs, Mansons and Sicollis ensured that Jim and Edna attended many Wineries, Pubs and beaches.
We would like to especially thank the Administration and staff of The Village at Smith Creek and especially the staff in Dobbin and Paynter Community who treated Jim and Edna with so much compassion, love and dignity.Dr. Robert Williams was Jim and Ednas Doctor. He treated them like family and was truly appreciated.
A Memorial Service for both Jim and Edna will be held at a later date. Those wishing to remember Jim and Edna may donate to an Animal Charity of their choice. We will dearly miss you Jim and Edna!
