Memorial Donation
Surrounded by his loving family, William (“Bill”) Snowdon Whitefield passed peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Camp Hill Veterans Hospital – Halifax. Beloved husband of Gulli A. Whitefield (Petersen) for 64 years, and loving father of Stephen Whitefield and Sharon Almon (Ken). Cherished grandfather of Darrell (Jennifer), Sarah, Jennifer, Jonathan, and Katelyn (Brandon) and great-grandfather of Cohen, Peyton, and Soren. Bill is survived by his brothers David and Raymond, and predeceased by brothers George, Samuel, Thomas, Robert, John, and Walter. Bill was born in Cobourg, Ontario on September 18, 1931. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1952 and was deployed with the HMCS Cayuga in the Korean conflict in 1953. He retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer in 1980 and was employed by the safety service company MSA until his retirement. Bill will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, family and friends. A tireless worker, Bill always had time to help all whom he met, and for those who knew him, that meant everyone he was in contact with! Bill was a proud member of the Leisure Travel Vans “Maritime Leisures” group, he and Gulli having inaugurated the local chapter, and he loved travelling far and wide, meeting and talking to people. He loved to sail, owning the sailboat Stesha and more recently enjoying trips on Stephen’s sailboats. He was a volunteer for the Canadian Naval Air Group (CNAG) Shearwater branch and enjoyed being involved in organising events and participating in their execution. As a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch 160, Bill was a Service Officer, a Poppy Campaign volunteer and conducted school visits relating to the role of the military and the importance of supporting the Canadian Forces, especially at Remembrance Day ceremonies. A special thanks to the Legion and to the staff at Camp Hill, wing V6E, for their support. A public service is being held in memory of Bill at the Legion, 703 Main Street, Dartmouth (902-462-2910) on Friday, January 3rd, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
