Peter Penner, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully in the early hours on October 25, 2019, at the St. Boniface Hospital.
Surviving his passing is the love of his life of 59 years, Betty (nee Hiebert) and their children, Rose (James) Sawatzky, Ken (Bonita) Penner, and Wendy (David) Malko. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren; Russell, Carly (Mike), Heather, Jordan (Ataya), Everett and Campbell.
Peter was born in Chortitz, Manitoba to Martin and Katharina Penner (nee Goertzen) on January 21, 1934. He was the second youngest of 11 children. He leaves to mourn a large extended family including siblings, John, Abe and Neil (Judy), sisters-in-law Helena and Mary. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Katharina (Ben), Martin (Agatha), Henry (Agnes), Jacob, George, Isaac (Tena), Frank (Helen), and sisters-in-law Sara and Katherine. Also mourning his passing are Betty’s siblings; Mary, Margaret (George), and Dorothy (Frank).
He was predeceased by Betty’s parents, Peter and Margaret and siblings; Tina (Peter), Anne (John), Helen (John), Peter (Judy), and a brother-in-law Abe. He loved his family dearly and was proud to be an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Dad held several jobs throughout his work life including Alberta Hydro, Nelson River Construction, Quinton’s, Eaton’s and Winnipeg Transit where he retired from in 1993 with the distinction of being named “Driver of the Month” on a couple of occasions. He was a dedicated and loyal employee and instilled these values in all of us.
Dad volunteered his time and bookkeeping expertise to the church to ensure that their “books” were always in good standing, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. Peter loved to travel and planned yearly family excursions. Once retired, Peter and Betty spent as much time as they could at their favourite place in Florida.
He was a meticulous carpenter and groundskeeper. His homes and lawns were always well maintained.
When dad was told he was not well he remained positive even when the news was discouraging.
Viewing will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, on Thursday, October 31, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place Friday, November 1, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Reinfeld Cemetery, Reinfeld, Manitoba, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. in the Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank all of the medical professionals who have been involved in his treatment this past year, in particular, Dr. James Edye-Rowntree for his exemplary care of Dad.
