Obituary for Joyce Carolyn Henderson (Savela)
On November 20, 2019, Joyce Carolyn Henderson passed away with her family by her side after brave battles with multiple sclerosis and cancer.
Born October 24, 1944 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, she was predeceased by her parents Albert and Effie Savela (Patola) and her older brother Clayton Savela. She was “Auntie Joy” to his children Jennifer (Robert), Charlotte, Rebeca (Dion) and her sister-in-law Ann. Devoted wife to Don Henderson for 51 years. Loving mother to Brett (Liseanne), Jillian and Gregg (Roberta). Beloved Nanny to Wesley, Bridget, Dara and Lyla.
Joyce enjoyed a long retirement from her work as a nurse at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where she loved caring for and getting to know her patients.
Joyce spent most of her life in her beloved community on Henley Place in Oakville before moving to Burlington.
Joyce had a passion for the arts and travel and delighted in experiencing them with others. Much like her father, she enjoyed watching sports and dancing. Joyce’s entire family brought her joy and her legacy of storytelling and playing games will live on through them.
Joyce deeply treasured her many life long friendships and considered her friends and neighbours to be part of her family. Joyce welcomed all into her home with a kind smile, a warm heart and a sympathetic ear. She was always willing to put the kettle on and listen to others with genuine compassion and care. The relationships she nurtured brought her the utmost joy and she will be deeply missed but forever loved by every life that she touched.
A Celebration of Life ceremony is planned for the Spring of 2020 in Burlington, more details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, just leave your grandchildren’s messy fingerprints on the fridge door, let the dishes go unwashed while you chat after dinner and say hello to a stranger. Joyce knew not to sweat the small stuff and that it was always the people, not the things, that you’ll appreciate the most.
