John Sawler
1931-2019
John Stanley Sawler passed away on December 6, 2019 in
Queen’s General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Western Shore, he was the
son of the late John Stanley and Susan Sawler. He was predeceased by
his wife, Pearl; brothers Lawrence, Sydney, Franklin, Gilbert, Lester
and sisters Rosalie, Elsie, Idella, Arlene, Evelyn and
Irene.
John worked for Sears in Bathurst. While there, he met the
love of his life, Pearl where they were married. John was very active
in his church as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, board member,
Sunday School and Church treasurer. John and Pearl moved to
Bridgewater where thy took up residence in Victoria Ridge, where he
continued working with Sears for a total of 25 years before
retiring.
He was active in his Church in Bridgewater and also in the
Multiple Sclerosis Society where he was treasurer and also President
for 7 years. He spent many years volunteering at Nursing Homes in
Mahone Bay and Bridgewater, where he did birthday parties, driving the
van, activity director, played guitar, called Bingo and led hymn
sings. Residents, staff and family members came to know and love John
as he interacted with them and their families for many
years.
John also volunteered at the Bridgewater Food Bank where he
worked and was on the Board of Directors for 25 years. Over all, John
volunteered for 66 years; he won many awards for his
efforts.
He was also known as the “Fudge Man”, making
wonderful fudge; every Hallowe’en over 3 generations came to
his house just to get the sweet treat. He also made baked goodies that
many folk were lucky to get trays of at Christmas and throughout the
year. John will be missed by his relatives and the many friends he
made over the years.
Visitation will be held 12:30-2:30pm on Monday December 9 in
R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville, where the Funeral Service will be
held 2:00pm on Tuesday December 10. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to North Queen’s Nursing
Home, Caledonia. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.A.
