Obituary
Peacefully, surrounded by family on Sunday, December 22, 2019 after many years struggling with breathlessness and over the last four months fighting his most recent bout with cancer. Harold William Whalen, in his 84th year, passed away in his home on White Lake, in Erinsville, Ontario, as was his wish, on a day that began with the most beautiful rosy sunrise and ended with a calm, still, starry night,. Beloved husband of Joan Whalen (Taylor) devoted father of Patti Ann Whalen (Barry) of Amherstview; Bill Whalen (deceased 2018), Barb Way (Dave) of Tamworth; and Tim Whalen (Linda Wager) of Kingston. Adored Papa of Kallista and Shae-Lynn Way and Taylor and Jenna Whalen, “the loves of his life.” and his fur buddy Rex. Brother of John- deceased, James “Jimmy”- deceased, Aevon (Doris); Shirley Ann Kearns; Ronnie- deceased, Danny (Linda); Ford- deceased (Bonnie); Glenn (Anne Masterson-deceased; Freda). Dad’s legacy of hard work, strength, faith and devotion to family will live on in his grandchildren who were witnesses of it over the course of their lives and especially over the last few years. He fought so hard to have more time with his granddaughters and to listen to and laugh at their stories. We could not have fulfilled dad’s desire to pass at home without the support of all of the family and friends who faithfully visited and called and the services, PSW’s and nurses resourced through the SELHIN (Natasha Jackson), the Palliative Care Program (Valerie Cooper) and the assistance of the Smile Program (Andrea Williams). Thank you to our compassionate care givers Patti Miller, Lisa Birdsell and nurse Jenn Wales, who brightened dad’s days with their presence and who were a source of strength to us with their dedication to dad’s comfort and care, right up to the week of his passing. Many thanks to Eddie and Lisa Courneyea, the best neighbours and snowplower ever! We have nothing but praise for all the health care dad received at KGH, HDH and Providence Care Hospitals. We hope we expressed our sincere appreciation of your support as we received it. We are in good hands with the medical care personnel and systems we have access to in this Greater Kingston area. Our family can not thank you all enough. The family will receive friends at the HANNAH FUNERAL HOME, in Tamworth on Friday, December 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Assumption in Erinsville on Saturday, December 28 at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment at the Assumption Cemetery Columbarium. Memorial donations (by cheque please) made to the Assumption Church Building Fund or (by cheque or credit card) to the Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
