GENEREUX Mabel Margaret Betty nee Johnson March 18 1925 — November 15 2019

GENEREUX, Mabel Margaret Betty (née Johnson)
March 18, 1925 — November 15, 2019
Mabel Margaret Betty Genereux (née Johnson) passed away peacefully in the Kelowna General Hospital on November 15, 2019 at age 94 with her loving family around her.
Born in Pontillas, Saskatchewan on March 18, 1925, she moved to Rosetown, Saskatchewan where she worked in the Rosetown hospital as a nurse. She met her husband, Alexander Roger Genereux, and had 4 children before moving to Salmon Arm, British Columbia in 1960. They owned and operated Al’s golf driving range and miniature golf as well as Hannigans Burger King for several years. Mabel also worked in retail until moving to Kelowna, British Columbia in 1974, where she worked in the Fields department store until she retired at age 65.
Mabel is survived by her son James “Jim” Genereux of Kelowna; daughter Cheryl Muench and son-in-law Rich Muench of Broomfield, Colorado; grandsons Jordan and Justin Muench of Broomfield and Longmont Colorado and Michael Burns of Calgary, Alberta; granddaughters Marissa Burns of Edmonton, Alberta and Carolyn Dietz of Broomfield, Colorado; and great granddaughter Lucy Muench of Broomfield, Colorado. She is also survived by sister-in-laws Darline Genereux, Olive Hainsworth and Lil Genereux all of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Shirley Lyons of Vancouver Island, British Columbia; as well many nieces and nephews.
Mabel is predeceased by her husband Alex Genereux; daughters Gloria Genereux of Salmon Arm, British Columbia and Brenda Burns of Vulcan, Alberta (who passed Feb 5 this year); parents John and Christina Johnson of Pontrillas, Saskatchewan; and 10 siblings from Saskatchewan. Mabel was the last surviving sibling on her Johnson of the family.
Mabel’s love of family and strength was apparent to everyone who knew her, and her sense of humor was second to none. Some of her interests and life highlights included being named president of the Salmon Arm figure skating club (although she never skated), being a member of the Kinettes, riding on a motorcycle on the top of a car for the Salmon Arm fall fair parade (although she never had a driver’s license) and volunteer activities that included the heart and stroke foundation, the Kelowna Hospice Foundation, and the meal program and thrift store at the United Church. She was always proud of her Swedish heritage and took a trip of a lifetime with her sister to visit remaining family in Sweden, Denmark, Norway in 1984.
Mabel loved to play bingo, LCR and scratching her lottery tickets. She enjoyed fishing, bowling, walking downtown every day and the color purple was definitely her signature color. She remained in her home until age 92 before moving to the Dorchester retirement home.
We want to express our sincere gratitude to our dear family friends, Shawn and Dan Brama, Kathy Robinson and Muriel Furneau for their frequent visits and loving kindness; to the staff of the Dorchester and the many wonderful care aids with Interior health that helped to make Mom more comfortable; and to the caring staff at the Kelowna General Hospital that cared for her multiple times this year. As a senior she often expressed how much it meant to her for a simple gesture of kindness and caring, or those that took time to visit with her or call her just to brighten her day. Therefore, in lieu of flowers or donations we are asking that everyone to consider doing 94 (for each year of her life) random acts of kindness to pay it forward in her memory. A Celebration of Life will be held in August of 2020 in Kelowna and her ashes will be laid to rest in the Mt. Ida cemetery in Salmon Arm.
