Eileen’s Obituary
Born in Paris, Ontario on August 29, 1940 to Eugene and Mary Stratton, Eileen Alice Stratton spent the majority of her life in her hometown of Paris, attending Paris District High School, before leaving for St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Toronto and graduating in 1962. Upon her return, Paris native Robert Atfield, who was serving with the Canadian Airborne, made quite an impression on her, and they were married in May of 1963.
Eileen began and finished her nursing career at the Willett Hospital in Paris working in the Operating Room and the Emergency Room, and performing the post of Night Supervisor before her retirement. In between, she spent a period of time working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brantford and Pembroke Cottage Hospital.
Her boys, Robert Jr and Edward (Bobby and Eddie to her), were born while the family was living in Pembroke.
Eileen was known for her handiwork and you’d often find her creations competing for ribbons at the Paris Fall Fair – knitting, crocheting, tatting, and embroidery. She gave generously of her creations, and there are many who have been the recipients of these keepsakes.
She was a welcoming mother-in-law to Corinne Atfield (Ed) and a very devoted Nana to Vashti Kappers (Christiaan), Thalia Atfield (Blake Kenwell), Taryn Elizabeth Atfield, and Isaac Atfield. (She spoiled those grandbabies so much, that at Christmas a U-Haul was needed to return from the celebrations — especially since she finally had a reason to buy those frilly dresses!) In recent years, Eileen has thoroughly enjoyed visits from great-grandbabies, Josie and Harrison. She was always one to enjoy a good cup of coffee with her nursing friends including long-time friend, Mary Miller.
Eileen passed away on December 10, 2019 at Brantford General Hospital. She will be remembered for her strength and determination, her sense of humour, and her generosity to others.
Friends will be welcomed at the DWAYNE D. BUDGELL Funeral Home, 1105 Rest Acres Road, on Sunday December 15, 2019 from 2 to 3 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow in the Funeral Home Chapel at 3 p.m. In accordance with Eileen’s expressed wishes, cremation has already taken place. In Eileen’s memory, donations to the Congregation Melech Yisrael Shul (cmy.on.ca/)would be appreciated by the family.
