Henry; David Melville
Surrounded by his family at Louise Marshall Hospital, Mount Forest on December 3, 2019 in his 70th year. Beloved husband of Marie for 41 years. Loving Father of Cara of Hannon, Ontario and Blaire (Michael) Dodd of Guelph. Brother of Graham (Barbara) of Flesherton, and Kimberley (Jim) Stewart of Holstein. Brother-in-law of Margaret Oldfield of Dundalk, Janice (Wayne) Croft of Flesherton and the late Pat Oldfield. Uncle of Amanda, Blake (Christina), Ethan (Tammy), Andrew, Brett and Ryne. Great Uncle of Autumn, Quinn, Foster and James.
David – affectionately known as Filbert to family and friends- was a man of many interests, skill and talents. After growing up in Dundalk, he worked in Toronto before moving to Maybourne when he joined the MPAC (Municipal Property Assessment Corporation) crew in Owen Sound. He made lifelong friendships there in the office and as a member of their basketball team. David played hockey seriously and for fun, but always with a passion, during his lengthy old Timers Hockey Career. His baseball career began with his Assessment team and grew with Slow Pitch in Dundalk and Mount Forest, hitting a peak with his buddies in Boca Raton, Florida.
The CKNX studio in Wingham and Circle 8 Ranch witnessed the beginning of David’s square dancing career as a member of a very young Dundalk square dance set. Much later he joined the Pasture Prime Promenaders who won the Canadian Open Mature Square Dancing Championships. He then mastered clogging as he danced in parades, at International Conventions and down grocery store aisles.
David took early retirement and he and Marie hit the road to finish their coast to coast Canadian Camping tour as well as cruising international waters from Alaska to Panama to Scandinavia and points in between. He took great delight in his days on stage with the Dundalk Little Theatre as he was able to sing and act his way into the hearts of the audiences.
David’s greatest accomplishments were as husband to Marie and father to Cara and Blaire, whom he loved with no limits, nurtured and supported in all of their endeavours. We have lost a wonderful man.
To celebrate the great jovial Dave, please wear your favourite local sports jersey or clogging shirt.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, December 7 at the Royal Canadian Legion Dundalk Branch 285, 109 Proton Street N, Dundalk from 1-3pm with memories shared at 2pm. Memorial contributions to the Terry Fox Foundation or the Friends of the Dundalk Library would be gratefully appreciated.
