Obituary
Dave Heiland passed away on December 20, 2019 in Calgary at the age of 80 years.
As a husband, dad, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, his positive outlook and unlimited optimism was a true gift. It was what gave him the ability to always see the best in people, giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. The youngest of 6 children, Dave’s journey began in Round Hill. He left farm life to attend Camrose Lutheran College, then moved to Edmonton where he met Kathy, his wife of 58 years. A family followed soon after as did a move to Grande Prairie. It was here that Dave pursued his dreams of entrepreneurship, becoming the owner of Heiland Stationers and later, Beltone Hearing Aid Centre.
Dave was a dedicated family man who was truly involved in the lives of his two daughters and later three grandsons, all of whom he gave the biggest gift – his time. He was very involved in the community as a Kinsmen, had a rich social life and countless friends. Dave’s interests were many – camping with his family, skiing, curling, hunting and fishing, all of which saw him and those he was with, enjoying life to the fullest. His ability to find and facilitate fun saw him as an active participant in many shenanigans he would later recount with a twinkle in his eye and a chuckle. In 1991, Dave and Kathy moved to Calgary where they enjoyed the next phase of their life. Encouraged by Kathy, Dave became involved in Calgary’s Disabled Sailing Association which saw him spend many enjoyable hours sailing, volunteering and competing in Mobility Cup races across Canada. He was a determined competitor who loved a good race.
Dave crossed the final finish line on his own terms with the support of those who loved him. He will be missed by his wife Kathy; daughters Venita and Colleen; son-in-law Ian; and grandsons Quinn, Myles and Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dave’s memory to the MS Society – Calgary and Area Chapter, or a charity of your choice.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of David E Heiland 1939 2019 (age 80)..
