Memorial Donation
McKenna, Richard Owen
Age 51 of Cow Bay, Nova Scotia passed away November 30, 2019 at the Victoria General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born in Halifax and raised in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, Richard was the son of Owen and Isabel McKenna.
Richard was active in the communities of Eastern Passage, Dartmouth and Cow Bay all his life. In his youth and as an adult he played on many, many baseball, softball, and hockey teams. The little-known answer to a trivia question in the local paper – the ROST ballfield in Eastern Passage is actually named for Richard, Owen, Sherry and Troy. Richard’s Dad needed to name the field to apply for grant money to employ them to maintain the fields since they spent all their time there anyway! He was a proud member of the Cow Bay Buffalo Club and especially enjoyed assisting with their charitable initiatives. Richard had an amazing zest for life which could sometimes be trying for those closest to him, but he probably packed 100 years of experiences into his 51 years.
Richard was tremendously generous to everyone he met. He might be down to his last dollar or meal, but he never hesitated to share with anyone less fortunate. All his siblings knew that every errand with Richard was going to take longer than expected because someone was going to get a little assist on the way!
Richard’s sons, Jacob and Jordan, grew up in Dartmouth with their mother, Lisa McKenna. Richard was incredibly proud of his boys as they become young men. Richard is also survived by siblings, Leo (Vera Wheadon), Cathy Paget (Steve), David (Shawna), Patricia Jakeman (Tom), Marita Sheppard (Darrell), Sean (Sandro D’Ascanio), and Mike (Natalie Woodbury). Richard is also survived by many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins including our aunt Heather Collens (Gary) who grew up with us. He was predeceased by his niece Emily.
The family would like to thank all the medical staff who cared for Richard over the course of his illness, particularly his oncologist, the Chemotherapy team and the Palliative care team.
Visitation will be held at Eastern Passage Funeral Community Funeral Home Tuesday December 3, 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm. The funeral mass will be 10:00am Wednesday December 4 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church on Shore Road in Eastern Passage.
