Obituary for
Dr. Gordon Gerald Finley
Dr. Gordon Gerald Finley – Age 75, of Truro, passed away on November 12, 2019 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Amherst on December 28, 1943, he grew up in Shinimicas, NS. He was the son of the late Hazel Finley (Chapman) and the late Gerald Finley. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Carolyn Finley (Mosher). He is survived by his son, Chris (Julia), Calgary, AB, grandchildren, Daniella, Isabella, Lucas; daughter, Jan, Harbour Grace, NL, grandchildren, Jeffery, Joshua; son, Jeffery, Calgary, AB; sister, Ruth White, Truro and several nieces and nephews. Gordon was a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph, Ontario in 1967. He held various positions over the years as veterinary pathologist, veterinary laboratory manager and private Animal Health Consultant. His career spanned over 30 years with the Provincial (Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture) and Federal Governments. Gordon was also stationed in Winnipeg at the National Center for Foreign Animal Disease from 1997 to 2001. During this time, Gordon was also part of a Canadian team that went to the United Kingdom to help control the Foot & Mouth disease outbreak. Gordon returned to Nova Scotia in 2001 as Program Veterinarian covering all species and disease programs. Considerable time was spent with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) as the Nova Scotia Government representative on their Board of Directors. Eventually, Gordon also worked in different capacities such as chairing the development of a Canadian Code of Practice for mink and fox welfare and with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Program. Early on, Gordon had a passion for gardening – tending to two large gardens that fed several families. He also loved fishing – always trying to catch that sea trout run ‘up the crick’. He truly loved spending time at the cottage with family and friends, whether it was having a lobster feast or hosting extraordinary music weekends with his wife, Carolyn, or tending to his berry patch. He had a strong connection to the land. Gordon loved all sports whether it was watching or recording his kids’ games or the Blue Jays. Gordon and Carolyn also really enjoyed winters with the Brook to Bay Community in Florida. Together they entertained, played shuffle board, walked on the beach and collected shark teeth. He truly loved his grandchildren and loved to hear about their adventures and accomplishments as they grew. His quick wit, logic, centeredness and gentle kindness will be greatly missed. We would especially like to thank the caregivers from Today’s Nurse, staff at Parkland and the doctors and nurses from Colchester East Hants Health Authority.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 18th from 6-8pm with a Celebration of Life being held on Tuesday, November 19th at 2pm with The Rev.
