Ehab Shaker Antoun Shaker

Ehab was born in Cairo Egypt, on August 15, 1933, to late Antoun Shaker and Isabelle Sabongui. From a very young age, he demonstrated a great artistic talent and his parents sent him for professional training in1947.
At University, in 1952, Ehab’s professors were so impressed with his abilities, they recommended him to work at El Gomhoreya Newspaper and illustrate for children. When he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1957, he was already renowned.
In his early years, Ehab worked as a Press Cartoonist and Illustrator in most Egyptian newspapers and magazines, as well as some magazines in France. He also created Theatre plays for children in Cairo, while working with UNICEF, and in France.
In 1968, Ehab moved to France to study Animation and work with Paul Grimault. He has created 5 short animated films between Paris and Cairo. “1,2,3”(1974) received “Le prix de qualité du Centre national français” and represented France all over the world. Love dance (1996) received “Best Animation Film” in Cairo’s National film festival. He was member of Jury at several Animation festivals.
Back to Egypt, he continued illustrating for adults, while developing great interest in children’s magazines (Cairo-France-Kuwait-U.A.E), which lead him to create with his wife and writer Samira Shafik, the famous “Shamsa & Dana” comic strips (amongst others), which were distributed all over the middle East and ended up educating many generations for 30 years.
Ehab authored & illustrated 5 children’s books (Egypt & France), illustrated more than 20 children’s books (Egypt-Germany) and received many 1st & 2d price awards from Egypt and Switzerland. His books toured exhibits around the world (Egypt – France – Italy – Former Czechoslovakia – Switzerland – Lebanon – Iran – U.A.E.) and he was often member or head of Jury for artistic competitions.
At the same time, Ehab remained a painter, he always had the dream to paint music. He spent his lifetime researching how to represent form, movement and sound. He had many exhibits in Egypt, France, Japan, Austria, Italy, Spain, Jordan & Oman.
Ehab was predeceased by his brothers Maher Shaker (Nazek Talaat) and Nagui Shaker (Vera Lagator). Beloved husband of Samira Shafik for over 50 years, and tender father of Shahd (Ron Studt) and Yasmine (Sherif Iskander). Ehab treasured his grandchildren Haydn, Karsten, Hana and Nader. He is survived by his loving sisters Nini Shaker (Late Talaat Galaby) and Mireille Shalaby (Late Kamal Shalaby), his nephews and nieces Ashraf and Sherine Shaker (Late Tarek Iskandar), Hazem and Manar Galaby (Adel Ayad) and Adam Shalaby. He will be remembered by his devoted cousins Waguih, Wadid, Magdi, Soula and Mona Sabongui, as well as Magda and Bahaa Shaker.
