Obituary of Carolyn Bielby
On December 10, 2019 at the Sault Area Hospital, Carolyn peacefully passed away with family at her side. Loved by many including her husband Paul, father Jim (Carol) Howe, mother Joan (Glyn) Clarkson, sister Sharon (David) Hamlin, sister-in-law Judith (Andrew) Kyle and father-in-law Brian. Auntie Car or AC to Liam, Victoria, Catherine and Alexander. Carolyn had a very special place in her heart for Megan, Devan and Emma.
Carolyn was 57. She started life in Greenock Scotland and moved to St. Catharines when she was just a ‘wee lass’. It was there on the Niagara River above the Falls that she learned to sail her albacore and also in St. Catharines at the Grantham Curling Club where curling became such an important part of her life. Summers camping at Killbear Provincial Park with her family held such a great memory for Carolyn that later in life she would take everyone she could to go camping.
It was also in St. Catharines at Thursday night recreational rowing league that she would notice a tall red head sitting in the starboard side 5 seat and they would fall crazy in love with other. She knew she was mad about him when she agreed to move to Dryden in NW Ontario and was happy to receive Sorel’s for a Xmas gift! Ten+ years with great friends and lots of adventures and it was time to follow her man again when they moved to ‘the Soo’. Book clubs, lunch dates, tea by the river in Belleview Park, Wednesday and Friday curling are just some of the things Carolyn so enjoyed in ‘the Soo’.
Carolyn was strong, courageous, and was a fighter. Carolyn was a great listener and gave her heart to those who needed it. She lived by her phrase “Be Kind”.
Thanks goes out to all her medical team that gave her the best care and let her have as much time with us as possible, albeit too short.
Carolyn asked that friends and family get together for afternoon tea, to reflect and share stories together. The celebration will be held at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road, 705-945-7758) on Saturday, December 14, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Memorial donations to the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library would be greatly appreciated.

  1. So sorry to hear of Carolyn’s passing. Sympathies to all family and friends.

Very fond memories of her and the Howe family at the Parkway Sailing Club.

My family name is Howes, and one memorable camping trip to Kilbear Park stays fondly in my memory. Joan, Sharon, Carolyn Howe, joined forces with Tina, Peter, Julie, Christopher and Samantha one summer about 40 years ago. We decided to go up early and let our partners come up on the weekend. We travelled in the big blue van trailing a sailboat of course. When we arrived at camp it was pouring rain and we decided that when the rain let up, we would only put up one tent for the eight of us. In the meantime, we were hungry and cold! Out came the sandwiches and the bottle of sherry! Yes, we all took a swig to warm us up. There was lots of laughter in the van. When the rain let up somewhat, we erected the largest tent, anchoring as best as we could onto the boat trailer etc. It was quite windy at that time too! We decided to sleep in our bags fully dressed and deal with everything else in the morning! Samantha, the youngest, about 3, was passed from person to person as she was our hot water bottle and Carolyn and Sharon fought over her saying, it’s my turn now! As we quietly lay there, I said to Joan and the girls, do you feel something above our faces? We were all in agreement that part of the tent had collapsed right above us! I volunteered to go out and re-anchor the tent, as there was no need for anyone else to get wet. We finally fell asleep after a good belly laugh! The next morning we woke up to beautiful sunshine and we were able to finish setting up our campsites. A memorable vacation with the Howe and Howes family! So sorry for your loss but we still have the memories! Sending hugs from all of us, minus Dave who passed away in 1996; and Chris in 2011.
