Obituary for
Mervyn James Villemaire Q.c.
Mervyn James Villemaire, Q.C.
1927-2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mervyn James Villemaire on December 6th, two weeks shy of his 92nd birthday.
Short in stature but a giant of a man, Mervyn touched so many lives. Whether you met him in the gold mines of Northern Ontario, the classrooms of Osgoode Hall, or on a golf course, you were inspired by his kindness, compassion and peppery language.
Mervyn studied at St. Michael’s College and Osgoode. He practised law for over 62 years, always fighting with a fierce passion and conviction for his clients. Mervyn was honoured to be elected to Kitchener City Council for 15 years and spent 6 years on Regional Council. He also served on numerous Boards in our community.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Claudette, of 65 years. Beloved father to Caron, Tom (Diana), Mark (Jennifer), John (Rita Levato), James (Tatjana) Proud grandfather of Francine (James Mignacca), Scott, Laura, Jessica (Jesse Moses), Sarah (Chris Monteith), Julia, Luke, Isabella and Magdalena. Great-grandfather of Leo Mignacca. Predeceased by daughter Francine and grandson Bernie Gall Jr.
We are so grateful to the A.R Goudie Home for the love and respect they showed Dad during the time he was in their care. A truly exceptional facility with compassionate and devoted staff.
We want to sincerely thank Dr. John Campbell for his years of support with dad’s many health challenges and for keeping him on this planet much longer than expected.
As per Mervyn’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family mass will be held. As expressions of sympathy, please consider a memorial donation to one of Mervyn’s favourite charities, The Working Centre (cards available through the Henry Walser Funeral Home, Kitchener 519-749-8467).
Whenever you hear Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”, please remember our charismatic father. The line, “to say the things he truly feels,” was the gift of Dad. He freely expressed his deep love and opinions… nothing was left unsaid, and we will cherish his words of wisdom.
Here are the lessons he left us with:
1. Life is beautiful, and there is beauty in everything.
2. Laugh as often as possible.
3. Believe in God.
4. Exercise daily.
5. Always polish your shoes.
6. Take your vitamins; there is a vitamin for everything.
7. Check the flyers for grocery deals and never ever waste food.
8. Eat your meals at the same time every day; never say no to dessert.
9. Work hard.
10. Love your spouse.
