Obituary of Nola Eileen Jeffrey
Nola Eileen (Worthylake) Jeffrey, of Digby, passed away in Mountain Lea Lodge on October 28, 2019, aged 90. Born in Brighton, Digby Co. on February 2, 1929, Nola was the daughter of the late Avard and Ingeborg (Haight) Worthylake.
She was an educator, wife and mother. Her educational career and her family were her passions. After graduating from the Digby Academy, she attended the Nova Scotia Normal College, Truro, during 1946-47. Nola was a teacher, School Counselor and administrator of Guidance and Special Education in Digby District School. Upon retiring in 1984, she became a consultant with the Department of Education. She was always involved as an educational leader – locally, provincially and nationally.
During her first year of teaching, Nola met and married Victor Jeffrey of Sandy Cove. Later they moved to Digby where they spent the remainder of their lives. In 1962, their son, Charles, was born. He was fulfillment of a wonderful life together.
Nola continued with her professional education at Acadia University obtaining BA/B. Ed., and working at the M. Ed program. She later obtained the M. Ed (Guidance) at the University of Maine at Orono. Additional education obtained from University of Toronto and the Institute of Study (special Education) in Sweden & Denmark.
An important aspect of Nola’s life was her commitment to the people of her community through her involvement as a volunteer. She kept involved in all aspects of education, and assisted in special areas of interest: health services, economic development, historical services and the evolvement of equality for women. The recognition by the town and community for her activities were profoundly appreciated.
Nola enjoyed reading/studying, sailing, swimming, walking. She loved visits by her family, especially three grandsons. An important aspect of her life was discussion sessions with friends and travelling widely. Being a member of the Digby United Baptist Church added serenity and peace for her.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law Roxana; grandsons Andrew and Benjamin of Stellarton; grandson James, High Level, Alberta; great-granddaughter Adalynn of Pictou; dister Hilma Woods, Mahone Bay; and several nieces and nephews.
