It is with great sadness that the family of the late Bertha Gallant (nee Vater) announce her passing on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s at the age of 69 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband, Kurm Gallant and daughters, Elena (Toby) and Robyn, grandchildren of her heart, Heather, Kyle, Beverly, Jessica, Alyssa, Jaxon, Leya, Libby, her fur grand babies, Dixie and Diesel (whom she secretly loved), and great granddaughter, Alex. Bertha also leaves to mourn her sister Mary Shallow(Gus), brothers Jim (Barbara), George (Marina), Enos (Philomena) and Leo, her sisters- in-law Callista, Jane (Ches), Martha (Tom), Madonna, and Jane, brothers-in-law Clyde (Rose), Alban (Marie), Guy (Cecilia), Bob, Stephen (Caroline) Gerard (Linda), Donald (Judy), as well as a large number of nieces and nephews, family, friends, God child and special friend, Barbara Ann Dunphy. Bertha was predeceased by her parents, Florence and James Vater, grandparents Thryfena and William-John Vater, brother, Andre Stewart, nephews, Kenneth and Richard Boland, Wesley and Jeffrey Gallant, parents-in law Stephen and Cecilia Gallant, brothers-in- law Basil Gallant , Junior Eldridge, Patrick Boland; and sister-in-law Rowena Gallant. Bertha was well known in the community for her welcoming nature, her quilts which will continue to keep many people warm and her love of cooking which fed many people over the years. She will be missed by many. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2019 from 7 – 9 pm at Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Curling followed by a prayer service with Monsignor Jim Robertson presiding. Burial will take place at a later date. Special thanks to the staff at the ICU in Corner Brook and staff of 5 South A, CCU and the ICU at the Health Science Centre for taking such good care of Bertha over the past month and to Dr. Morris who has taken care of her for many years.
