Obituary of Zavina Kheir
Zavina Kheir, passed peacefully with family by her side on Sunday September 15th after a courageous battle with ALS.
Zavina was a very respected woman, a trail blazer, an educator, a world traveler, a community leader and most of all a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sorely missed by all.
Her service began as an educator with the Toronto Catholic District School Board, spanning a long and distinguished career in several high schools across the city of Toronto. From troubled youth to adult classes, Zavina provided guidance, instruction and inspiration to many.
She founded and directed, for forty years, St. Gregory Armenian Saturday School, with a mission to promote, safeguard and preserve the Armenian language and culture. A proud Armenian, she served on many boards and organizations to forward Armenian causes. The voice of Armenians has grown quieter with her passing.
After her retirement, she embraced life by travelling. She sprinkled her love and laughter across many continents.
Post retirement, Zavina continued her selfless service to God and community by coordinating the arrival and integration of Syrian-Armenian refugees, serving on the Markham Seniors Hall of Fame Awards committee and continuing to bring back troubled youth into the classroom, as was featured in recent CBC and Globe and Mail interviews.
The youngest of 7 siblings, she never backed down from a challenge, beating cancer twice, she knew life was precious and should be embraced. While her life was cut short by ALS, her legacy lives on.
We would like to thank the ALS Society and Hill House Hospice for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to these remarkable organizations. Most importantly, hug your mom, to remember ours.
