Obituary
Obituary for Wa Yeng (Jennifer) Yan
December 21, 1939 – September 7, 2019
Wa Yeng Yan passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2019 after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s.
Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Wa Yeng was the second youngest of eight children. She married her next-door sweetheart, Hong Bin (James) Yan. They lived in Hong Kong for a few years and then immigrated to Vancouver, Canada, in 1966. They made Vancouver their home where they raised six children.
Wa Yeng was a devoted wife and mother. She had a sharp and inquisitive mind and liked learning and trying new things. She instilled in her children the importance of family, education, hard work, teamwork and helping others. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed eating and learning to make new dishes. Family gatherings were always centred around food.
Wa Yeng had a green thumb and spent countless hours toiling in her garden which was her pride and joy. She was good with languages and later worked as an interpreter at the YVR airport. Wa Yeng and her husband enjoyed vacationing with their travel buddies. She was an active member of the Langara YMCA.
Wa Yeng lived a full and fruitful life. She showed amazing perseverance and resilience in overcoming adversity. Known for her selflessness, feistiness, strong work ethic and her sociable and caring nature, she added spice to all our lives. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Hong Bin, Wa Yeng is survived by her younger sister, Sou Ling (Richard), her children, Alexander (Maria), Grace (Pierre), Sabrina (Irvin), Christina (Michael), David (Claire) and Joseph (Wynn) and 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to Pacific Parkinson’s Research Institute:
