BRADEN, Victor John Stewart ~ Age 70, with saddened hearts, the family of Victor John Stewart Braden announces his passing on Friday, September 27, 2019, with his wife by his side in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born on June 2, 1949, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Vic came to the Annapolis Valley as a young man, posted to CFB Greenwood after joining the Canadian Armed Forces as an armourer in the Air Force. He married the love of his life, Rodina Moore of Sydney Mines, on September 6, 1969, and having fallen in love with Nova Scotia eventually left the military and put down permanent roots in his cherished Valley. After the Air Force, Vic’s other jobs included working as a correctional officer at the Kings County Correctional Centre; security and production at Michelin’s Waterville plant; and after retiring from Michelin he drew great pleasure from being a part-time school bus driver. Vic loved life and loved people, so it was difficult to see his mind and body slowly ravaged by Benson’s syndrome, an early-onset variant of Alzheimer’s disease. He will be missed by Rodina; daughter, Lesley (Brent) Laybolt, Lunenburg; sons, Michael, Wolfville; and Alexander (Chelsea), Ottawa; and his five grandchildren, Noah and Jacob Laybolt, Mackenzie and Kaitlin Braden, and Henry Braden. He is also survived by his brother, Leslie Braden and wife, Roswitha, and nephews, Jason and Clayton, all of Winnipeg. He has many cousins who he fondly remembered. He was predeceased by parents, Elmer and Velma (Jackett) Braden, Winnipeg. Prior to his declining health, Vic was active in the parish life of Saint Anthony’s in Berwick, as Eucharistic minister, lector, and with the music ministry. He worked with the Roman Catholic Cursillo movement for many years, being a member of the first team bringing men’s Cursillo to PEI. With Rodina, he was one of the original leaders introducing the Roman Catholic COR Youth movement in the Annapolis Valley. He also volunteered with Open Arms Ministry, Berwick. Those who knew Vic will remember him fondly for his endless jokes and infectious laughter. He loved curling, spending time at the hockey rink, and was always up for a game of cards. In his last years at home he enjoyed socializing with his friends at Timmy’s, joking that he went to the “office” twice a day. He also loved vacationing in scenic Cape Breton, swimming and gathering beach glass along the island’s beautiful beaches. So many people have kindly and lovingly supported Vic and our family through the dark days of his illness. You remembered the real Vic, and accepted his changes with an empathy and love that has touched us deeply. Vic was given incredible care by dedicated staffs at the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre and Grand View Manor, and was supported throughout his journey by Dr. Robin Bustin. This gave Vic and our family a deep sense of peace and gratitude. In an effort to help researchers better understand his rare form of dementia, Vic chose to make a tissue donation to the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank. There will be no visitation. Join us as we gather to celebrate Vic’s life and his journey home in 1:00 pm on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 120 Mill St., Berwick. Rev. Fr. John MacPherson and Deacon Don Hasler officiating. After the service, there will be an opportunity for friends to share their memories or humorous stories, just as Vic would have wanted it. Interment will take place in Berwick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank through the Dalhousie Medical Research Fund (dmrf.ca), in order to support the critical work of Dr. Sultan Darvesh and his team.
