Stephen Frederick Lewis

From Avondale, NL
May 15, 1951 – September 27, 2019
Lewis, Stephen Frederick: May 15, 1951 – September 27, 2019, With sadness, we announce the passing of our dad, Stephen Frederick Lewis, aged 68 years. Steve lost a short battle with cancer, after a long struggle with the dementia that stole his memories but never his kindness or humour. Although he resided at Pleasant View Towers as well as St. John’s and Bay Roberts, he always called Avondale home. Left with fond and loving memories are his daughter Karen (Robert White), his son Craig (Dana Mugford) and their mom Denise (nee James), his beloved sister Joan and brother in-law David Conway, who were always by his side, his grandchildren, the light of his life, who brought him joy and laughter until the end: Timothy & Victoria Mugford (Bonnyville Alt) and Nyla and Ella White (Paradise, NL). A construction worker who always did an honest days work for an honest dollar, and was unfailingly generous and giving; and who in his retirement filled his nights with taxi driving for Jiffy Cabs. Steve instilled in his kids the importance of showing the same respect for the school janitor as for the doctor or parish priest. Until his dying day he was concerned for the well-being of others, and did what he could to take care of those less fortunate. On behalf of our dad, we’d like to say a very special thank you to the amazing staff at 1 South West, Pleasant View Towers. Your kindness, compassion, friendship and care ensure that your residents, particularly our dad, live their last years with dignity, joy and kindness. Words can not do justice to the work you all do, or the way in which you do it, and we are eternally grateful for each and everyone of you. He’d want us to especially mention Vicki, Nicole, Paul, Meghan, Theresa, Amanda, Sheena, Tracy, Lester and Melissa not only for their TLC but also for the many laughs (and the extra mashed potatoes) they shared with our dad. Steve loved horses, and while flowers are lovely, he would think them a waste and would ask you instead to make a donation in his name to the Newfoundland Pony Sanctuary, and to do something kind for someone in his memory. Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation will take place on Sunday, September 29, 2019 from 2 pm – 4 pm and 7 pm – 9 pm. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 10:30 am from Assumption Church Avondale with Cremation and Inurnment to follow. Stephen is predeceased by his parents: James J. and Catherine Lewis (nee Doyle) of Avondale, grandparents: Johanna and Stephen Lewis (Brigus Junction) and his beloved pop & nan Frederick & Mary Ann Doyle (Avondale), with whom he will be laid to eternal rest.
