Rose Mah

Born June 28, 1926, New Westminster, BC, Rose passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 28th, 2019 at the George Derby Centre in Burnaby. Predeceased by husband Hoy, and son Carey. Rose was loved and will be missed by sons Jeffrey and Alan, their partners, and her four grandchildren.
Rose was a kind and gentle woman, who always put family first. Willing to help others, she not only raised her own boys, but she helped raise her three younger siblings, and also many of her young nieces and nephews. Rose was also a caregiver for her Dad, her Mother, and her husband when they needed her tender loving care.
For many years, Rose worked in retail helping her sister in her produce store in Victoria, and then selling menswear at Tong Kee in New Westminster. After marriage, she worked as an innkeeper, then when she had kids, she dedicated herself to raising her boys.
Rose loved to sew. From knitting beautiful heavy knit sweaters for nephews, sewing bridesmaid dresses and fitting wedding dresses for others, along with making dresses, suits, shirts and blouses, Rose found joy at her sewing machine. Rose also loved to bake. It was a special day in the kitchen when she would bake pound cake, chocolate oatmeal cookies, chiffon cake, or her signature apple tarts. Rose and Hoy also loved to put on full 10 course Chinese meals at home. Her preparation was meticulous, we would see her carefully clean and prepare, spending hours cleaning the bird’s nest before making bird’s nest soup.
Rose was diagnosed with dementia in her 80s, and her boys lovingly cared for her as together they coped with her condition. In recent months, Rose received amazing support and compassion from the professionals and the volunteers at George Derby Centre, Crossroads Hospice, Burnaby Hospital, and through the Vancouver South Health Unit.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, September 9th at 10:00 am at Burquitlam Funeral Home, located at 625 North Road, in Coquitlam. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider making a donation to one of Crossroads Hospice Society, George Derby Centre, Burnaby Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
