Obituary for Michael J. Clark
>
Michael Clark of Vancouver, deeply loved and cherished husband of Maureen Shepherd, departed unexpectedly on the evening of 20th of August, 2019 at VGH. Michael also leaves devoted sister Robin Clark, nephew Michael (daughter Margaret Cooper-Clark); as well, mother-in-law Elsie, brother-in-law Tom, nieces Debra and Cheryl and their families. He was predeceased by parents Margaret and Don Clark and father-in-law Thomas Shepherd, all of Regina.
A curious and always lively mind led Michael to studies in English, Drama and Art History in Regina, Montreal and Vancouver, time in London and the UK and to his long career in libraries. Colleagues and students at U of Regina, SIAST, UBC and Emily Carr University of Art & Design likely remember his enthusiasm, knowledge and amazing memory for dates, details and colourful back-stories.
His passion for Canadian art blossomed after a move to Vancouver and Emily Carr. Creating an archive of the Art School’s beginnings, its growth and many vibrant instructors and students was a goal dear to him. And who could forget his unrelenting pursuit of material on the enigmatic artist Vera Weatherbie, Charles H. Scott and other artists from those early years.
Michael was always patient and generous with his time and attentiveness and his great story-telling ability, dry wit and mischievous sense of humour were priceless. Favourite books, films, TV shows, music and heritage architecture were topics he loved to share. A few also knew he stayed current with CFL and MLB scores as well as political news. Long-time friends meant a lot; some he kept in touch with over several decades. Surprising them with a card, a unique poem and collage gave him great joy.
In retirement, Maureen and Michael continued enjoying Vancouver’s bookshops, art galleries, cinemas and theatres. MC loved the company of their adored cats, old and new friends, creating his poetry and art, and writing his stories. Tenacity, a determination to maintain connections, a sometimes obstinate character and his whimsical sense of fun kept him going through the difficult times. His twinkly eyes, gentle voice and the sound of his laugh won’t be forgotten. He was, indeed, a lovely guy.
A Celebration of Life is planned and any charitable donations in Michael’s memory would be wonderful. To share your memories and condolences, please go to the end of this memorial page.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Michael J Clark..
