Keith Cowan

COWAN, Keith
December 20, 1929 – September 17, 2019
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Keith Cowan. Keith was born in Yorkton, SK on December 20, 1929 to William John Cowan and Sarah Elizabeth Heron. He had wonderful childhood memories growing up with his sister Claire and brothers Ian, Bruce & Jim, before moving to work in a photography studio in Wynyard, where he met and married Corrine Helgason. He started his own photography studio in Foam Lake and Keith and Corrine were blessed with their two children, Kevin and Kristin. Keith attended Teachers’ College in Saskatoon and after teaching in Foam Lake for a few years, the family moved to Saskatoon where Keith returned to University and received his B Ed., BA and Post Grad Diploma. Keith’s teaching career was primarily in the Elementary School System and he had been a principal for eleven years when he retired in 1989. One of the highlights of his teaching career was the two years he taught at a Teacher Training College in Sierra Leone, West Africa, in the early 1960s. Throughout his life, Keith sat on many school and church committees, and was a Trustee of McClure Place for several years. In the early 1970’s Keith and Corinne built their family cabin at Delaronde Lake, where they spent many treasured years with family and friends before Corinne passed away in 1997. Keith and family continued to enjoy their time at the cabin, eventually with his partner Fran Campbell, who he felt very fortunate to have in his life. Keith enjoyed wood working, carving and fixing things. If he didn’t know how to build it or fix it – he would figure it out. He had a passion for “fixing” lawnmowers. There was never a project he wouldn’t tackle and his grandchildren always said “If Papa can’t fix it – no one can”. Keith was a loyal friend and he often remarked that he was truly blessed to have such great friendships in his life, many of which lasted decades. His life overflowed with adventures and memories made with family and friends. Keith’s love of life, sense of humor and generous heart touched many people throughout his life. Thank you to all the great friends who have cared about Keith. Your friendships meant so very much to him. Keith will be forever remembered by all who knew and loved him, by his children Kevin and Kristin; by his grandchildren, Brandon (Kendra), Ashlyn (Tyler), Victoria, Vanessa, Nickolas and Lukas; by his great grandchildren, Liam and Alina; and by his partner Fran. A service to celebrate Keith’s life will be held at McClure United Church (4025 Taylor St. E.) on Tuesday, September 24th at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Debra Berg officiating. Memorial donations in Keith’s memory can be made to McClure Place Foundation or to a charity that has special meaning for you. Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
