John Henry
MacNeil – 88, Bible
Hill, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on
Friday morning, September 13, 2019, at Halifax Infirmary, QEII,
Halifax. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Charles and
Catherine (Lynk) MacNeil.
John was a member of St. David’s United Church
where he served on the Board of Stewards, Board of Trustees, other
various committees and sang in the choir. He was an electrician and
worked the majority of his career with BG Chico International on big
projects in the Maritime Provinces. An avid community minded man, he
worked tirelessly organizing Monday Seniors Bowling League, Senior
Men’s Golf League, organizer and participant in The Seniors
Games and in 2017 was awarded Bible Hill’s Volunteer of the
Year award. In his younger years, he played ball and hockey and
coached women’s ball. An eternal optimist, John was proud of
his multiple holes-in-one at Hole #5 at Mountain Golf and Country Club
and he valiantly cheered for Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple
Leafs. He and Rhoda enjoyed square dancing and were members of The
Cobequid Twirlers for many years and he also enjoyed a good game of
cards.
Family meant the world to John and he enjoyed spending time
sharing in family activities and special occasions. John is survived
by his daughter, Cathy (Bunny), Milford; son, Tom (Lynn), Middleton,
Annapolis County; grandchildren, Ryan (Amanda) MacNeil, Windsor;
Jonathan (Odessa) MacNeil, Nictaux; Beth (Stephen) MacLean, Ontario;
Megan (Ashley) Thompson, Kingston, Kings County; great grandchildren,
Emma, Aiden, Cameron, Brennan, Emily, Harper, Finleigh; sister, Jessie
Hilborn, Sturgeon Falls, Ontario; brothers, Fraser (Brenda),
Middleton, Annapolis County; Brian (Betty), Dartmouth; numerous nieces
and nephews; Rhoda’s step-daughter, Fern (Paul) Walker,
Ottawa; step-daughter-in-law, Brenda Black, Debert; sisters-in-law,
Dorothy Beebe, Wentworth; Edie MacNeil, Coxheath; brothers-in-law,
Herman (Margaret) Langille, Valley; David Gillis, Sydney; many other
loving in-laws. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his
first wife, Geraldine (Walsh); second wife, Rhoda May (Langille);
sister, Charlotte Gillis; brothers, Freeman MacNeil, Grant MacNeil.
Special thanks are extended to the staff at Colchester East Hants
Health Centre and Halifax Infirmary, QEII (6.1) for their amazing care
and compassion.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where John’s
family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, September 17,
2019, and funeral service 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2019.
Reception will follow. Interment in Bible Hill Cemetery, Warren Drive,
Bible Hill. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in
John’s memory to St. David’s United Church or a
charity of choice are welcomed. Private messages of condolence may be
