Beloved husband, father, son and friend, Herb Petschauer passed away at the young age of 53 on Saturday, September 1, 2019 in Langley Hospice, BC.
Herb was born in Port Alberni, BC to loving parents Adolf and Vera Petschauer. He spent his formative years watching Monty Python, building forts in the bush, and doing chores on his parents’ hobby farm. Herb was heartbroken by the loss of his father in 2001.
With a fondness for numbers and a creative mind, Herb pursued a Physics degree at the University of British Columbia. Courses in computer science led Herb to a long and successful career in software development. He was a valued team member who brought humour to challenges, grace to conflict, and helpfulness to any difficult tasks his team needed to finish. Herb was an avid cyclist and loved the uphill as much as the downs. His yellow lab, Murphy, was his trusty sidekick until his passing in 2010.
In 2004 Herb met his soulmate, wife Lisa Ferris. These two jokers loved to hike, travel, camp, cook, and spend quality time with friends and family. Becoming parents to their bright, sweet boy Harlan in 2010, is their greatest joy.
In November 2016 darkness descended on the family when Herb was diagnosed with brain cancer. Despite this incredible blow, the choice was made to fight as hard as possible and to live full lives. In the three remaining years Herb had, the family enjoyed snorkelling trips to Maui, camping, tobogganing and an incredible amount of laughter. Herb fought like he lived, with grace, courage and humour. He never complained, barely ever got depressed. He has taught us all how to live with purpose.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday November 3, 2019 from 1-4 pm at the Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club in Surrey, BC.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Red Cross, Delta Hospice Society, Langley Hospice Society or Canadian Cancer Society.
