Ellen Kennedy, aged 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 9th, 2019 at the Swan Valley Lodge after a long struggle with dementia. She was born on December 26th, 1921 in Lacombe, Alberta to parents Harry and Margaret Martin. She was raised on the farm in the Floradale district with 5 brothers and sisters. Ellen married Doug Kennedy on June 3rd, 1941 in Swan River where they lived most of their married life. After Doug’s passing in 1999, Ellen moved into an apartment and then became a resident at the Swan Valley Lodge in 2010. She was a fun-loving person who wasn’t afraid to tell it like it was. She worked in many businesses around town as well as being a hard-working homemaker. She kept a spotless house, enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing crib, golfing, music and singing. Picnics and outdoor activities brought great enjoyment as well. Her family was the center of her life.
Ellen was predeceased by her parents; husband Doug; daughter Gay Harris and all her siblings Alice Dawes, Gordon Martin, Wallace Martin, Irene Walstrom and Stewart Martin. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Garry (Karen) and Bryan (Lorna); grandchildren Larry (Carla) Harris, Carrie (Ron) Risley, Maureen (Randy) Owens, Joy Kennedy, Sean (Emily) Kennedy, and Bryna (Adam) Moloughney. She is also remembered by 8 great-grandchildren Taylor and Halle Harris, Erin and Calli Owens, Joseph and Liam Kennedy, Callum and Andrew Moloughney.
We are thankful to all the staff at the Lodge who appreciated her unique character, unpredictable comments and listened to her repertoire of memorized songs. Thank you to all friends and family who visited and supported her over the years. Ellen was one of a kind and we will all miss her. Now she is at peace.
A service of remembrance was held at St. Andrews United Church on September 16th, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Kathy Highmoor officiating. Interment will take place next summer at the Birchwood Cemetery.
