Elizabeth Mary O’Dea (nee Swain)
January 16, 1926 – September 19, 2019
Memorial Donation
Elizabeth Mary O’Dea (née Swain) was born in Calvert on January 16, 1926 and died in Bay Bulls on September 19, 2019 at the age of 93.
Above all, Elizabeth devoted her long life to the care of her family. She had a profound devotion to Our Lady and prayed the rosary daily. She valued friendship and had a strong sense of hospitality. She looked to find the good in everyone and always greeted others with a warm smile. She loved to play accordion, always had a song to sing, and greatly enjoyed a night of bingo and a game of 120s.
Her beloved husband, Patrick O’Dea, died in 1992. Elizabeth often reminisced of their life together. She fondly remembered her family in Calvert, all of whom had gone before her, including parents Michael and Mary Margaret Swain, sisters Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Cecilia, and Valetta, brother Charles, and aunt Nora Rossiter. She spoke often of her husband’s parents, Patrick and Clara, and his siblings, Thomas and Isabelle. In recent years, Elizabeth was saddened by the loss of her daughters-in-law Marion Chafe and Marilyn O’Dea and she mourned the passing of many lifelong friends, especially Dorothy Grouchy and Elizabeth Lundrigan. She prayed that she would one day be with them all again in Heaven.
Elizabeth leaves behind children Brian, Patrick, Dominic, Dennis (wife Marie), Charlie, Mary (husband Armand), and precious son, Fabian. She also leaves grandchildren Amanda, BJ, Dominic, Robin, Neil, Sheri-Lynn, Leeanne, Colin, Jonathan and Daniel, and great-grandchildren Autumn and Rowan, as well as daughters-in-law Rosarie O’Dea and Marlene O’Dea, and a large circle of nieces and nephews from the Swain, Boland, Hayes, Murphy, Carey, and O’Brien families. Elizabeth cherished the enduring friendship of Margaret Crockwell and Josephine Tucker.
Elizabeth received impeccable care under Dr. Peter Morry. She looked forward to his frequent house calls and she considered him and his staff a blessing in her last years. At the time of her death, her caregivers were Lisa Clowe, Shannon Williams, and Thora Williams. She appreciated all they did for her.
Elizabeth also looked forward to her weekly visits from Mary Carey who, as an extraordinary minister to the sick, faithfully brought her Holy Communion every Saturday evening. Also, Msgr. Patrick Kennedy, Fr. Thomas O’Rourke, and the Martin family visited often to pray with and for her. These were intimate moments that comforted Elizabeth in her sickness. Since moving down the harbour, frequent visits from Barbara Oliver, Stephen and Kimberly Maloney, Darlene, Norma and Sheryl Williams, and her dearest young friends Robert and John Martin cheered Elizabeth greatly.
The wake will take place at Ryan’s Funeral Home in Bay Bulls on Sunday, September 22nd and Monday, September 23rd from 2-9pm. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 24th at 1pm at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church in Bay Bulls and the burial will follow at Our Lady of Mount Loretta Roman Catholic Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations to Sts. Peter & Paul Parish Restoration Fund in Elizabeth’s name are gratefully accepted.
