Douglas’ Obituary
Douglas Alexander McEwan
May 25th, 1941 – September 14th, 2019
It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Alexander McEwan, 78, of Greenwood, Nova Scotia, on September 14th, 2019. Doug is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Hazel Mary McEwan; sons Duane (Marija) McEwan, Daryl (Rosemary) McEwan and daughter Debra Kruger. Grampa (aka “Mr. Doug”) was also a cherished part in the lives of his step-daughters Diane (JR) Letourneau and Donna (Mike) Lenehan. From this the many grandchildren, nieces and nephews; Holly, Nikita, Logan, Daniel, Marcas, Mitchell, Matthias, John, Kimberly, Allison, Sean, Jillian, Jennifer and Josh, helped complete the circle of his loving family. The extended family, special friends, community members and associates who positively impacted his life are too numerous and vast to list. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Doug and Violet McEwan; sister, Heather and son-in-law Robert.
With dedication and loyalty, Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Doug McEwan proudly served his country for 37 years with the Canadian Armed Forces as an Air Weapons Controller, taking posts across Canada, the United States and Europe. Concurrent to his military career, Doug was also actively involved in officiating amateur hockey at all levels including junior hockey with the Ontario League, The Western Hockey League and at the professional level with the Central Hockey League. Doug has been credited with mentoring young referees of the NHL. One highlight of his refereeing career was officiating at the Memorial Cup Finals at his beloved Montreal Forum. He was an avid golfer and curler who was passionate about volunteering with provincial associations. In June 2019, Doug was formally recognized by The Nova Scotia Golf Association for his 25 years of professionalism and commitment; having served in a number of capacities including referee, tournament director and finally President. Far beyond the numerous accolades and accomplishments of his professional career, it was Doug’s devotion, love, and support he felt for his family, friends, church and community that were closest to his heart.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20th, 2019 at Queen of Heaven Chapel, 14 Wing Greenwood with Padre Michael Conteh officiating. A reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98, 1472 Veterans Lane, Kingston. Family flowers only please. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
