Canning Lister

Obituary

Lister was born in Cranbrook BC on November 11, 1925 to Frederick and Sarah Canning of Sheep Creek BC. He was the younger of two children, and was predeceased by his parents, his older sister Ruth Beday and her son Fred Beday, and his wife Kaye, as well as many of her family the HOCKLEY CLAN. He passed away in the wee hours of September 5, 2019 at the Kimberley Special Care Home (PINES).
In 1947, he met and married the love of his life Kaye Hockley, a love that lasted 69 until her passing in 2016.
He spent his younger years growing up in the mountains on either side of the valley packing horses and guiding many hunters up the steep trails. Raised on the ranch on Sheep Creek that is now the JP Ranch he spent hours riding the trails and chasing wild horses, as well as making many trips to the ole school house at the junction of Sheep Creek Road and Premier Lake Road to visit his best friends the Pommier boys and of course to court Kaye, who was teaching school at the time.
In 1958 they moved to the Blake property at the end of Moan Road on Skookumchuck Prairie. Here they raised their 3 children, Helen, Fred and Kathy. From the farm he lived his ideal life, a perfect blend of farming, raising cattle, hunting and cutting Christmas Trees, here he built and maintained an outdoor roping arena which is still used today for barrel racing. He chased many calves and steers in the arena, with friends and family until he could no longer ride his horses. They lived at the farm until 2015 and they moved to the Western Lodge in Kimberley, after Mom’s passing, Dad moved to the Kimberley Special Care Home.
He is survived by his son Fred (Carol) and daughters Helen (Guy) and Kathy. Also left are his grandchildren – Cody (Claire) and their sons Levi and Dawson – Sara, and her children Connor, Harmonie and Savannah – Tim(Stacy) Robbins and their daughter Molly and Kelly Robbins – and Jaycee (Lane) Pighin and their daughter Andi. He also leaves his niece Judy (Garth) Scott of Kitimat, BC and his special niece Sandra (Jeff) of Sparwood.
Special thank you to the Staff at the Kimberley Special Care Home PINES, for all the love and wonderful care you gave to our Dad over the past three years, and especially those who helped us through the past week. “Your Cowboy” will live on in your hearts forever. Thank you!
Also to Susan and Brian who visited Dad weekly and shared many of his adventures over the past few years, thank you Susan for being with Dad til the end. Thank you also to Cheryl who helped us immensely with Dad’s extra care during his stay at the Pines.
REMEMBERING A LEGEND will be October 19, 2019 at the Wasa Hall from 1 – 5pm. A time to share stories of Lister and enjoy the friendships made over the years.
