MARTIN, Arthur Alexander – passed peacefully at his home with his family by his side, on September 12, 2019, in his 96th year. Predeceased by his wife, Georgena (née Flindall), of 71 years, eldest daughter Carolyn (Berlin), his parents Allan and Lucie Martin (née McKay), and sister Alice (Sheffield). Loving father of Marilyn Scobie, Barbara Hall (Chris Powell), Allan (Patti Todd), and Brenda Martin (Paul Garrett). Big brother of Louise Snider and Campbell Martin (Mary-Anne). Sadly missed by his grandchildren, Christopher, John (Andrea), Adam (Monika), Calay, Heather, and great-grandchildren, James, Sho, Lisa, Ava, and Chloé.
Driven by his curious spirit, Arthur developed many lifelong hobbies as a youth in Brighton, including his love of music and sports. After five years of dating, he married his high school sweetheart, Georgena, just before heading overseas. He bravely served his country during World War II in the RAF as a navigator on Lancaster bombers.
After the war, he attended University of Toronto, where he earned his B.A. / B.Ed. He dedicated his life to teaching and was Principal at K.C.V.I. in Kingston, Bayview S.S. and Langstaff S.S. in Richmond Hill and Frontenac S.S. in Kingston.
Retirement kept Arthur and Georgena busy with many interests and hobbies. They bought a home in Florida and spent many winters golfing and hosting friends.
Family, immediate and extended, were extremely important to Arthur; driving for hours – on any given weekend – was a pleasure to him if the destination was family. He was passionate about genealogy, wrote extensively about the Martin family and was an integral part of the Martin Family Picnic.
Nothing made him happier than a day spent puttering in the garden, ‘travelling the world’ with his stamp collection, reading or working on his computer.
Arthur committed a great deal of time to the Ontario Regiment in Oshawa. He embraced their motto in all aspects of his life – Faithful and Prepared – he was there when needed and ready to do what was required. Throughout his long life, he celebrated the achievements of his five children and was always ready to help in any way. He was a man of integrity, had strong faith and was generous to a fault.
Arthur’s family wish to thank the staff at Taunton Mills for their love, support and care. A graveside service only will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Brighton, on September 28, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. If you wish to make a donation in Arthur’s memory, please donate to the charity of your choice.
