Peacefully, on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at the Sunnybrook Health and Science Center, in Toronto. Beloved husband of the late Annie Ludwig for fifty-nine years. Adored father and father-in-law of Elaine and Kjell, Allen and Lore, and Barry and Anna. Cherished grandfather of Isabel, Erin, Sean, Renee, and Summer; great-grandfather of three. He was predeceased by his six brothers and sisters. Abe was also a loving foster father to dozens of children. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Abe Pervin was an Army veteran and a leader in the boxing field since 1935. He was active as a coach at the Centre Claude Robillard until just a few years ago. He was a mentor to many boxers and was at the forefront of training female boxers. He has helped five professional boxers reach world champion status and has trained legions of amateur and professional boxers.
Abe travelled for boxing to many countries including South Africa, Bulgaria, Finland, Indonesia, Morocco, Sweden, England and Venezuela. He was the Head Coach for the Canadian Olympic Boxing Team in 1976 in Montreal and went on an invitational tour to three cities in France in 1969 and 1970.
His recognition and awards include the Invitational President’s Cup Boxing Tournament, Jakarta, Indonesia 1989, A Certificate of Merit from the Government of Canada in 1988 signed by Prime Minister Mulroney, Trainer of the Year from Fédération Québécoise de Boxe Olympique 1985-1986, and induction into the Quebec Hall of Fame in 2010. He is also a member of the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame. Abe was included in the Guinness Book of World Records, when he was 94 years old, as the oldest living boxing coach.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean-Talon St. W., on Sunday, September 22 at 1:00 p.m. Burial at the Shomrim Laboker Congregation Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva will be held in Toronto. Donations in his memory may be made to Sun Youth, (514) 842-6822.
