Our mother Florence Louise Tobin passed peacefully away on September 4th after 91 years of a life filled with the joy of family and a lifelong commitment to her community. She and Dad (Vince) met while still in their teens at Harmon Air Force Base in Stephenville and began a journey of more than 50 years of married life together. Nine children, 20 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and One Great Great-Grandchild were to follow and all were welcomed with love by Flo and Vince.
Mom (Florence) frequently said, “You cannot live your children’s lives.” Yet she and Dad, until his passing in 2000 followed closely the lives of every member of their large extended family and offered encouragement where required and celebrated accomplishments where they occurred. Mom was wise, very witty and a wicked crib player who famously gave no quarter to either Dad, her sons or her sons-in-law during countless hours of laughter and competition.
Mom loved to cook huge, expansive and delicious meals for all who sat at her table. The memory of her fresh homemade bread coming out of the oven still brings a smile of appreciation to us all. She was a giver at home and she was also a giver in her community. She believed everyone needed to give back and she practiced what she preached. Mom gave endlessly of her time and served at every level of organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary (Branch 35), the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, Girl Guides and The Trefoild Guild, the Food Bank and others where her organizational and leadership skills were called upon. Mom was selected as Stephenville Citizen of the Year in recognition of her volunteerism and was also a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
Though small in stature, Mom filled a large space in the hearts of family and friends and her community and we celebrate and gave thanks for her time with us.
Predeceased by husband Patrick Vincent, son Terry (2011), parents Albert and Mary Frye, sister Winnie, brothers George and Albert Jr. She is survived by her children Sherri Saunders (Jim), Janet Goodyear (Butch), Gloria Marshall (Harold), Brian Tobin (Jodean), Alice Keough (Joe), Ross Tobin (Martha), Craig Tobin (Cindy), Paul Tobin. 20 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Greatgrandchild. Brother in Law Nicholas Tobin (Mary), Sisters in Law Donna Frye and Patricia Frye.
As expressions of sympathy, flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
