Darrel Thomas (Bars) MacKinnon
Sydney Mines
It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle, and nephew, Darrel Thomas MacKinnon, age 59, on Monday, August 26, 2019.
Darrel, born July 31, 1960, was the youngest son of the late Neil Bernard and Eleanor Marie (Robertson) MacKinnon.
During his life, Darrel worked various jobs including Personal Care Worker (England), tractor trailer truck driver, labourer in the International Labourer’s Union, etc. He also owned and operated the Ultramar garage in Florence. All these jobs helped him make many friends across Canada and abroad.
Darrel’s summers were often spent relaxing at Piper’s Cove. During the winter seasons, he enjoyed plowing driveways of friends and relatives, (often for free). He also liked watching the Chicago Blackhawks and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles hockey games.
Darrel is survived by his siblings; Georgina (Dougie) MacNeil, George’s River, Gregory (Marie France) MacKinnon, Beaumont, Alberta, Neil (Ann Marie) MacKinnon, Little Pond, and Sandra MacKinnon, Niagara Falls, Ontario. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and close friends Laura Chisholm, Fabian Jessome, and Billy Campbell.
Besides his parents, Darrel was predeceased by his sister Ann Delores Thomas and her husband Lloyd.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A private burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Haley St. Adult Services Centre, or a charity of one’s choice.
