PITMAN, Clyde Rupert – passed away peacefully at age 91, surrounded by family, on September 21, 2019 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital.
He was born October 23, 1927, to the late Rupert and Bertha (Foote) Pitman, in Yarmouth.
He married the love of his life, Marion (nee Smith) Pitman on June 20, 1957, and was close by her side for their 62 years of marriage, even living in the care home together in their later years.
Clyde and Marion raised their three children, Roger (Betty Landry), Lynn (Wyman), and Dale, at their family home in Brooklyn.
“Grampie” showed his tender side to his three grandchildren, Meaghan (Wangsgaard), Tom, and Tyler (Wyman), and his great-granddaughter, Bianca (Wangsgaard). He was also survived by many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
He was a farmer and gardener for many years and he loved working with his horses. He worked away from the farm in Yarmouth as a stevedore at the ferry terminal and truck driver with Yarmouth Concrete and Gravel before retiring from Marine Atlantic in 1989.
He was a devout Baptist and held the position of Deacon at Brooklyn Church. He was also a lifetime member of the IOOF and member of a local bowling league for many years. He was a voracious reader, especially of non-fiction books and Western novels. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed walks in the woods, hunting, gardening, and camping trips in the RV.
His favourite pastime was playing cards and cribbage, and he was always chasing that elusive perfect 29 hand. He spent many afternoons with cards in hand, sharing stories and laughter with friends and loved ones. He often won the hand, but when he didn’t, you could hear him joke, “You fellers don’t play right!” His infectious smile, easy laugh, and playful sense of humour will be sorely missed.
Clyde was the last surviving member of his immediate family and, besides his parents, was predeceased by his sisters, Alice Earle, Winona Earle, Joyce Stoddard, Elizabeth and Evelyn; and brother, Bowman.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Yarmouth.
