Obituary for
Joseph Zachary Matergio
With heavy hearts, the family of Joseph (Joe) Matergio announces his passing on Sept 20, 2019. Left to mourn and miss this wonderful man are his wife of 64 years Edith Matergio, his sons Tony (Barb) and Paul (Frances) Matergio, the grandchildren he adored, Joshua and Alexa Matergio, along with his step-grandchildren Kurtis and Shanna Brazeau, and great-grandson Lincoln Brazeau.
Joe’s 90-year journey began in 1929 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. As a young graduate engineer, he initially moved to Toronto where he worked on the design of the famed AVRO Arrow. There he met and married Edith Strang in Toronto in 1955, and with the eventual cancelation of the ARROW project, moved his family to Kapuskasing Ontario. Joe’s 30+ year career at Spruce Falls Power & Paper Co. had him involved in many challenging and rewarding projects. Upon Joe and Edith’s retirement in 1991 they moved to Ottawa to be close to family and grandchildren.
Joe’s Celebration of Life will be held at West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, at 150 Woodroffe Ave, Ottawa, with visitation starting at 1 pm on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 PM and reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joe’s memory to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Joseph Zachary
