Smith, William Alfred
“Bill”
February 11, 1932 – August 13, 2019
Bill was born in Kirkland Lake and raised in Northern Ontario gold mining towns. He was predeceased by loving parents Alfred and Lena Smith, and by dear sisters Marge and Fran.
Bill travelled south to Almonte for his high school years where he met and married his one great love, Florence (Sweeney). They shared 64 cherished years. Raised in South March, their three daughters were instilled with the love of rural living, community and family.
Bill was a much admired and respected worker in various federal government departments, beginning with Mine and Technical Surveys, then Energy Mines and Resources, Health and Welfare, and finally Treasury Board. He retired in 1986 to enjoy the rewards of a loyal and dedicated public servant.
Bill relished yearly trips to sun-kissed beaches, sport fishing in Northern Quebec, and regular luncheons with former co-workers. These occasions focused on good food, but mainly opportunities for lively discussions. He was always the go-to man for friends and family whether it was lending a hand or giving valuable advice! Bill was well-read, well-watched (TSN), and well loved by all.
Bill and Florence moved from South March to Stittsville in 2007. Urban living provided another beautiful new home and wonderful neighbours. After Florence’s passing in 2017, Bill continued on – independent and stalwart – until his peaceful passing this past Tuesday.
Bill reminded all that his greatest accomplishments were his 3 daughters and their families: devoted Susan (devastatingly predeceased August 2017) and spouse Joe Muccilli (Alexandra and Victoria); rebellious Laurie (Morgan and Jessica); and forever-the-baby, Shelley and spouse Linnley Clarke (Hannah and William). Bill will be sadly missed by his sister-in-law Marni (Gil) Khoury, goddaughter Debbie and many nieces and nephews. It would be impossible to list all the loyal friends whom Bill considered “close.” We are especially mindful of Red Nesbitt, Tom and Ruthie Green, Winston Orange and dear Lucille Parizeau – with whom daily conversations and mutual support meant so very much to them both.
At Bill`s request, there will be no funeral service. Bill and Florence’s ashes will interred together at a later date.
Donations to the charity closest to Bill’s heart – “The Shepherd’s of Good Hope” – would please him.
His words for us all on a daily basis – Carpe Diem xoxo
