On Friday, August 2, 2019, Stefie (Winnie) Hutchinson (nee Tomczak) passed peacefully into the arms of her Heavenly Father Jesus Christ. She was 93 years old. She leaves to mourn her children, Eric, Arnold and Claire (Terry Porter and children Shelby and Dean). She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in 2017 by her ex-husband Boyd Hutchinson. Those who have gone before her include her parents, John and Mary Tomczak, sisters Jean, Antoinette, Helen and Elizabeth, and brothers George and Adam.
Stefie was born in Winnipeg on May 8, 1926. She lived on a farm when she was young. She loved the farm and always talked about all the animals and abundant food they had, and all the great times her family had together.
She left the farm for Winnipeg where she worked at restaurants initially. She got a certificate in Accounting at Success Business College. She then worked as a dental assistant. She moved to Windsor with her sisters and mother, and married Boyd Hutchinson on June 2, 1961. She had three children, Eric, Claire and Arnold. When they moved to Ottawa, she worked as a secretary for the RCMP. In the early 1970s, the family settled in Winnipeg.
Stefie excelled at being a homemaker. She was the best cook. We loved her perogies, cabbage rolls, and borscht. She always had fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden she lovingly cultivated and served at the table. Moreover, she excelled at being a loving mother, and gave the best advice and guidance. She cared for us in all our illnesses. She was always encouraging us to do our best and did everything she could to help us succeed.
She was always smiling and loved polkas and listening to the Ukrainian hour. She played the mouth organ and the accordion. Taking pride in her Polish heritage, on special occasions she always sang the Polish anthem Stol Lat, May You Live a Thousand Years.
Mom had the joy of the Lord. The joy of the Lord was her strength in good times and bad. Mom accepted Jesus Christ as her Saviour and is living in her mansion in heaven with Jesus Christ for eternity. Stol Lat, Mom!
Thanks to Dr. Borrett and the staff of Grace Hospital for the great care they gave to Mom. Thanks to Heritage Lodge where Mom stayed in her final months. And thanks to Arnold Hutchinson for taking care of Mom during her final years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 1379 Kenaston Blvd. Winnipeg, MB, R3P 2T5.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue (across from Brookside Cemetery) at 10:00 a.m.
