Robert “Bob” Leonard Scammell
March 9, 1932 – August 11, 2019
The passing of Robert “Bob” Scammell of Fredericton, NB, husband of Beverly Anne (Sanders) Scammell occurred on August 11, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, NB. Born on March 9, 1932 in Windsor, ON, he was the son of the late Leonard Arthur and Margaret Ruth (Greatrex) Scammell.
In addition to his wife, Bob will be greatly missed by his daughters, Leigh Anne MacKnight (Douglas), Lauren Eagle (Ken) and Lynda Reaume (Dan); his grandchildren, Stephanie MacKnight (Nolan Flavel), Scott MacKnight, Jenny MacKnight, Gordon Eagle and David Eagle; great grandson, Cole; nieces and nephews.
Bob retired in 1992 from the Department of Justice as an Assistant Deputy Minister. Following graduation from the University of Saskatchewan with a degree in economics, Bob enjoyed and contributed extensively during his working career which began as budget officer for the Saskatchewan Government; as assistant to the Deputy Minister of Finance in Ottawa; as manager of Head Office Services for Co-operators Insurance Association in Toronto and Guelph and lastly as Assistant Deputy Minister for the New Brunswick Department of Justice. Bob was always proud of his non-partisan public service for the three major political parties.
Following their retirement in 1992, Bob and Bev travelled extensively, enjoyed socializing with friends and golfing as “best friends” as well as being happily married since 1957.

Bob was actively involved in community services in Guelph and Fredericton.
This included City Council, Planning Board Vice-Chair, Industrial Commission Chairman, Chamber of Commerce President, Community Service Council, United Way Chairman and Program Chairman for Rotary in Guelph, as well as President of the Administrative Management Society.
In Fredericton Bob served on the Planning Advisory Committee for 19 years, including Chairman and Vice-Chair, President of United Way, first President
of the Capital Region Development Commission for six years; initial development and Chairman of Friends of the Fredericton Public Library, member of the Chamber of Commerce Board, member of the Forever Fund Board, participated in three Fredericton official plan reviews, and a member of the Fredericton Golden Club. Bob served as national President of the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association as well as a local branch President in Toronto. Bob spent several years as a cadet and officer for the Air Cadet League of Canada in Regina, Ottawa and Toronto.
A Memorial Service will take place at York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon Memorial Chapel on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11am with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Interment will take place at the Forest Hill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the United Way or the Chalmers Foundation.
