Patricia Pat Morton nee Lawrie 2019

May 29, 1930 ~ August 5, 2019
An end to a
great era. Wife, mother, grandmother, super mumma, nurse, hospital
administrator and community leader, Patricia (Pat) Anne Morton passed away
peacefully in Winnipeg on August 5, 2019 at the age of 89.
Pat was
predeceased by her beloved husband Robert (Bob) Morton in August 2007, but not
before they shared 55 years of marriage. Gone before her, and many too soon,
were her parents, Allan and Lena Lawrie, sister Mary Beighton, brothers Keith,
Grant and John Stratton, son-in-law Doug Mutual and great-granddaughter Nizana.
She will be
dearly missed by her children, Roberta (Garry) Merke, Cathy (Bill) Litchfield,
Darcy (Kim) Morton, Patty Mutual, James (Denise) Morton and April Morton (François Salmon). A great joy to her as grandma
and super mumma were her 14 grandchildren: Tanya, Jocelyn (Harris), Aaron
(Lauren), Jennifer (Shaun), Alison (Tyler), Becky (Corey), Shauna (Jason),
Heather, Kyle (Kyra), Chrissy (Russell), Trevor (Chantal), Meghan (Tyler),
Michael and Sasha, and her 13 great-grandchildren: Sophie, Hannah, Molly, Naomi,
Davis, Parker, Aiden, Reid, Zane, Zi-Anne, Ayda, Emmeline and Liam. Pat is also
survived by sister Barbara Slutchuk and brother David Stratton.
Born May
29, 1930 in Carman, Manitoba, Pat was shaped by early hardships, losing her
father when she was three and her mother when she was 17. With determination,
she followed her passion to become a nurse. As a student nurse, she met the
love of her life, Bob, and together they built a life, raising their six
children in Seven Sisters Falls.
With few
role models to emulate, Pat became a working mother, continuing to nurse while
serving the community. She studied hospital administration by correspondence,
eventually becoming the Whitemouth Hospital Administrator. A career highlight
was overseeing the construction of the new hospital.
In retirement,
Pat and Bob moved to Whitemouth, enjoying golf and the amenities of a larger
town. Pat volunteered with the Regional Health Authority and Ross United Church,
led babysitting and senior exercise classes, and sewed for friends and family. In
1999, Pat received The Judge J. M. George Memorial Award, “recognizing her
voluntary activities and accomplishments which demonstrated her outstanding
leadership and wisdom in the area of health care in Manitoba”.
In 2006,
with Bob’s health failing, Pat and Bob moved to Winnipeg to be near family. Since
January 2018, Pat resided at Riverview Health Centre; we are grateful for the
kind and caring 3W staff.
A private service will be held with burial to follow at the Victoria Cemetery near Balmoral. Should you wish to honour Pat’s memory, please feel free to donate to Diabetes Can. (MB & Nunavut), 401-1 Wesley Ave., Wpg., MB R3C 4C6 or to the Whitemouth District Health Centre Foundation Inc., Box 37, Whitemouth, MB R0E 2G0.
